After some advice from the auszookers oracle,

Today I cracked open a front diff ive recently bought out of a comp car, and found 1 tooth on the ring gear is chipped. I cant find the chipped piece in the housing, pinion seems to be in good condition, all feels good.

How do ya reckon it will hold up? is it likely to chew out the pinion, and in turn, the ring gear?

for the risk of potentialy busting and taking out your locker i wouldnt risk it...
altho if it was an open center i recon if you were an easy driver it would last.

ps Rusho. saw your car yesterday at glasshouse, very neat, good job

I'm currently having my locker fixed from a busted axle and pinion and it's costing me $1000. You don't want to go there!
X3, bin it!

Surely shouldn't be that hard to change only the ring gear? Just get another one!

Problem is they're a pair (crownwheel and pinion). Pinion height is the hard part in diff setup, but you could replace both. If you change the crownwheel only it's likely to get pretty musical. Cheap and easiest to put the locker in another centre.

Thanks lads, was pretty much what I was expecting. It is a vitata front steel housing, so swapping it to another diff ain't gonna happen

what ratio do you need to replace it. while you have it out its easy to swap the ring and pinion gears over.

Quote:
Lapping Process
Goodwill Engineering
To ensure smooth and quiet noise free functioning, the Gears and Pinions are lapped after hardening. Lapping is accomplished by running mating pairs together in a Gleason Hypoid lapping machine and then feeding a liquid abrasive compound under pressure into the gear pair. The compound removes small amounts of metal as the gears rotate, thus refining the tooth surface and achieving desired contact pattern.

I'll be able to tell you at the end of the week when I get the itemised bill as lapping will be part of my rebuild.

I had hotline 40 autoparts send me a sms the other day looking for a 5.12 front, I pushed past the collection of rear diffs & GV steel housings... and found nothing, well I found a couple but not sure what they are. I know one is a 4.6 & the other one I will have to check.

R&P = ring & pinion & they're both gears, so ring gear works for me... it is also a crown wheel & pinion... you say tomato, i say tomato. i'd hate to price a new one from suzuki, but they do come up forsale 2nd hand quite often.

Something about that break makes me think that diff wasn't set up properly. It looks like the contact patch was WAY out.

Sierra or vitara R&P's aren't hard to find unless they are 4.8 or 4.3. 5.12's are everywhere. Just replace both R&P

Cant tell you the price as the bill is itemised, but it only has a total price.
