I have one 35" Roxzilla mounted. The rims will be beadlocked, but I needed to know I was int the ballpark with clearance and stance before I cut and welded more rims.

at 18 psi, it sits 34" tall laden

As discussed, they do crown. Treps do this too, but they're cross plies. I've never seen a radial crown like this. This is also true of the "hard" 32's

They also feel insanely light compared to the Krawler/Walker combo. I know they'll get 3.8Kg per corner heavier with the beadlocks fitted, but they're much more manageable.

Is there a tolerance for tyres being out of round from new? My car bounces and wobbles at low traffic speeds and presumably high speeds to but not noticeable. I jacked the car and you can see about 3mm out of round on each tyre. They are Toyo open country with about 20,000 and all even wear.

They're an interesting tyre but I haven't heard of anyone running them on a Sierra.

They key will be how heavy and stiff they are.

Ok, so with everyone getting on the UTV/SXS tyre train, it's got me interested. I was out to dinner last night with a mate who works at a local bike shop but also works on SXS's etc etc… he was adamant he could source any tyre that Maxxis in particular makes (this is yet to be confirmed but got me a bit excited) so I got searching.

I'm aware the roxxzilla seems to be the pick of the bunch, however the smallest tyre available in a 15 inch rim is a 32, which measures closer to a 33 in the real world from what I gather. I'm more interested in a smaller tyre for now, something around 30 inch, for a few reasons: Gearing, driveline reliability, cop bait and the effort involved to fit them. To get a tyre this size, most require a 14 inch rim and I can't find anything suitable for a sierra. It was suggested to me I could make a 14 inch rim - weld a sierra stud pattern centre into a 14 inch outer, but mehh, I'm not thrilled on the idea and it's a shedload of work. I also couldn't find any weld on bead lock kits suitable for a 14 inch rim.

Bfg do the KR2 in a 30x9.5r15, which would be ideal I think but they are very expensive and I only know of one importer, so add freight to that to get them at my door.

Available in a 29x9.5r15, however is does say the overall diameter is 29.7, so may be closer to a 30 once mounted. From what I can tell they are from the same family as the roxxzilla, I'm going to assume they are of similar compound as the "hard" spec, with less aggressive tread pattern. I'm quite impressed with my current federals in muddy conditions but on anything else, especially rock, I think there is a lot of room for improvement, although it's hard for me to tell, I've never run anything else off road.

Keen to hear some thoughts, unless I'm missing something here, I think they could be a good option.

If i could get anything from Maxxis i would go a set of GV wheels and go these is a heart beat. As long as you are not afraid of bias ply.ImageImageImage

G & S Tyres in Melbourne imports these tyres. I hope that helps.

Why would you get these over the liberty's though? I remember seeing jono(?) on here have success with the creepy's, but I think that was a while ago, I'm wondering if there is better available nowadays. I'd have to do more research into them, but right off the bat, being a 16 inch (higher load ratings) and designed for a heavier car, aren't strong points compared to the liberty.

I'm not really sure what you mean when you say afraid of a bias ply, to be honest I'm not to knowledgeable on bias vs radial, I'm aware of the construction differences but I'm not too sure what this means in the real world, I'll look into it more.

I don't have any direct experience with the 7.00 Maxxis, Jon165 ran 255 85 16's. They worked very, very well. They did tend to burp the inner bead a bit but that may have been down to the rims (Gecko beadlocks)

They did bag, as you can see in this photo.

The big reason for running creepy's over a UTV tyre is a creepy is speed and load rated and doesn't have N.H.S on the sidewall. I think this is especially true for a 30" tyre which is basically legalish if speed and load rated. Once you're running a 35 or something it's not legal, load rated or not.

My preference has always been bias ply for off road cars as the tread is more flexible than on an LT radial. Race/UTV radials are a different ball game though.

Okay, good to know.

Interestingly, the liberty's have been DOT rated, but i'm not sure if they're actually approved. I was able to zoom in on a sidewall of one and it did have NHS printed in bold letters on the sidewall - that might be a size related thing, i'll look into it more tonight.

DOT* is meaningless in Australia on vehicles manufactured after 1973 - without the ADR approved "112/115 Q" type speed and load rating, the tyres aren't legal here.

It's the same reason swampers aren't legal here, even though they are DOT approved.


There is some trickery going on in the US with DOT approval on SXS tyres. In some US states, SXS's can be road registered and I assume they require DOT approved tyres to be considered for full registration. Also, there's something going on with, for example, Interco Tire, who are labelling some of their giant tyres as "SXS use only" to avoid having to go through DOT paperwork for tyres with 2.5" of tread depth etc. They are clearly not going on a SXS.


DOT approval does apply here for rims, not tyres.

Well, that rules that out then. I wasn't overly concerned about legality due to the fact that a 29-30inch tyre Is still illegal anyway, (although much less obvious then a bigger tyre ) i figure if i'm ever in a situation where the right authorities are bending down to look at the sidewall, then I'm stuffed either way. Whether heavier penalties may apply for something like this, i'm unsure.

30 inch tyres are legal of you have a model that came with 16 inch rims. Or your engineer is happy to sign off considering everything else between the models are the same.

Great width to height ratio, proven tread, light weight (not sure on the liberties but I wouldn't think they are much if any lighter than 14kg). I prefer bias ply for a lot of reasons, but balancing can be a pain.

This is true Brenno. These (whatever I end up with) are just for the hard top though which I'm not really interested in engineering currently (if I could even find an engineer willing to sign that off), it's just to much effort/cost for it i think. My tray back on the other hand will almost certainly be engineered whenever I get around to it.

Agreed, I done a bit of looking last night a found a few examples in japan I think, they look like they have pretty awesome proportions for their size!

Time for tires on the wombat. (SE416 swb) the 31's are too big and old. and I've got too many other things I wanna buy before I attack the transfer gearing.

Currently has 15x6jj Roh somethings that I've measured around 0 offset.
Also have plenty of GV rims about.

Thinking 30x9.5r15 or 245/75/16 depending on whats available. Has anyone had any luck with any of the smorgasboard of 'unbranded' tires that the market is being swamped with at the moment?
Car is on 45 day club permit, and a bush pig. Only commute is to get there.

Option 2 in something that size is a KM2 which is around $400 extra for the set.

I have 245/75 kumho kl71s, not exactly an unbranded tyre, but they go great and I recommend them, I wasn't even aware they still made km2s

My Jimny had Hifly MT601s on it when I bought it. They've been a great tyre for me. Never had a puncture, don't chip on gravel. A bit noisy new but good once they wear in. I got about 40'000kms out them + what ever the previous owner did. I bought another set. Cheap at $180 each for a 235/75r15, probably cheaper in the city. They do a 245/75r16 too.

I'm running Comforser muddies on my ute.

It never sees the road but they are great on my steep block and were the cheapest available when I bought them.

Hi all, I'm looking for new tyres, and have come across the Pirelli SCORPION MUD tyres, especially in 235/85r16. It looks like they have quite a small load index (108) , compared to most other competitors (120). Also quite an aggressive tread pattern. Wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. I was looking at those about 15 years ago because of the low load rating as you say. They were silly cheap then too, maybe $160 a tyre. They look a bit odd, the tread is quite a bit narrower than the section width of the tyre.

I never bought them, just surprised they still make them.

They do have an offset lug and a narrow tread width will favour a sierra.
