An engine swap has come up on my radar as my current g13 burns decent oil and instead of a rebuild a swap for more power while I'm at it seems like a good idea.

I've seen lots about vw diesels and g16s. G16s are reasonably available here in NZ, alot of the time in a dereg vitara etc. I haven't been able to find any vw diesels. I've looked into toyota a series engines as they are some what available too.

I'd like to hear any suggestions or ideas for an engine swap, preferably availability based.

I'm able to do fabrication and spend abit of time on this too.

Thank you in advance

G16b, don't bother with the diesel or Toyota swap.

Despite how many people do it in the US, the VW swap is a mess of problems and there are clearance issues with RHD.
The a series engines are heavy and have problematic gearbox choices.
G16b is the logical choice.

As one of those 'MURICANS, I agree with Gwagensteve on this.

The typical G16 transplant mainly requires a transmission adapter and slightly modified engine mounts. The easiest swap is the 8-valve engine with a G13 head/carb intake and a Toyota 3K carburettor swap. This swap eliminates need for the engine electronics.

You can find more information on the Toyota 3k Swap by doing a search for

toyota

at acksfaq.com. Further searching for

engine swap

can reveal more information of the G16 swap.

I hope that this helps!

The G16A 8 valve engines are now quite difficult to find locally, as they weren't available in this market after 1995 and were only fitted to SWB Vitaras. Most have succumbed to block cracks or have simply worn out from dragging around a too-heavy car for their power and torque. 15 years ago the 1.3 head onto 1.6 block swap was more common (and recommended by at least one local Suzuki specialist workshop) but the end result is poor in my opinion, when compared to the G16B.

The G16A trades off throttle response and a broad power curve for torque to move around the heavier vitara. I reckon it's a pretty lacklustre engine. Putting the smaller valved 1.3 head on it will accentuate low down torque but further degrade high RPM performance and throttle response.

The G16B is superior in every way and by the time you're pulling two old engines apart to mix and match the outcome is never guaranteed.
