My sons 2001 jimny with a non vvt M15a developed a leaky heater core and as a result he cooked the motor. This was a perfect opportunity to give the vvt to non vvt conversion a go. So we went on the hunt for a big block M18A. After a bit of searching we found a stat write off on pickles auctions. We budded and got the car for $1165 The 07 Liana on had 78000km with a full log book service history (can’t get much better)

With the motor ready on the stand all the Liana bits that were not needed were stripped off and put the 1.8 throttle body aside to reuse this later.

Next removed the vvt rocker, oil lines and timing cover then we removed the vvt timing chain and the intake cam. All these things are replaced with the non vvt part from your original motor. All the m series cam profiles are the same right through from the 1.3 - 1.8 I haven’t check the swift sport 1.6 so not sure on that one. The cam sensor in the back of the just leave it in there as a plug for the hole it’s not used for the non vvt

Motor fitted back in as normal I used the 1.3 manifold just because I didn’t want to muck around with the vac lines for the 4wd hubs. The 1.8 throttle body and throttle body coolant lines are used. With the motor in it started first go and man dose this this fly now.

Nice work and good documentation. Obviously you loose the benifits of vvt, but the displacement is far more important. I also would guess the factory non vvt m13 ecu would be happier with this set up vs a factory m13 vvt ecu running vvt m18 as the tune would be far simpler

Today I picked up a VVT 1.8 Liana engine for my 2000 Jimny for a ridiculously good price, but then found out my Jimny has a G series motor. (The recently re-installed identification plate said it had an M13A motor. It doesn’t!).
Now I’m thinking of selling my Zook and buying a later model with a VVT engine already in it.
Would you know if that would be a more straightforward swap than downgrading the 1.8 to non VVT?
Are you able to answer this or should I begin a new thread?

Yes it's much easier to swap the M18a into a 2005+ vvt Jimny. You don't need to swap the cam ect like Jimbo has here, just the sump, rocker cover, manifolds, mounts ect.
Whilst swapping the M18 into a G13bb Jimny is possible and has been done you'd probably want a whole M13 Jimny donor vehicle for all the parts you'd need and it would be quite a lot more work again. It would be uneconomical compared to selling it and buying a M13 Jimny to swap the engine into.
