I've decided on a coil pack Baleno g16b swap for my sj50 and have spent some hours searching and reading here plus YouTube guides. I have a pretty comprehensive list of parts to buy and modifications to make but I still have a couple of questions:
1. Searching here tells me the ecu for the auto and manual Balenos are different, but I'm not sure if this matters and whether I need to stick to a manual donor car.
2. Currently I'm searching for a cheap Baleno so I definitely get the engine, loom, dash, fuel pump and cradle, etc. If I end up buying just the engine from a wrecker, what is a g16b worth on average?
Thanks in advance. This forum is a treasure trove or knowledge and I have spent a lot of time reading and learning.

Ecu's are the same, however the harness on the auto is slightly different with there being an auto control module thingo incoorperated. You can just chop it out, the engine harness is the same and the ecu. When you weld the crank sensor section in your sierra sump it will seem like it lines up perfectly but chances are it will not sit deep enough. You can simply take a few mm off the plastic mount section on the sensor if it doesnt start and that normally does the trick. Despite what others may say the motor will run and diagnose fine without the vss and no difference in economy vs not hooking it up. In wa you pay 2k + for a decent engine, its almost worth buying a complete car if you can. If they sit for a while and have poor cooling system maintanance they are prone to head gaskets

Thanks very much for the detailed reply. The whole cars I'm looking at are around $2-3k so that does seem like the best way to go.

On the east coast a rough baleno seems to be worth ~$600 or so. Getting motor from a pull-it-yourself wrecker is also an economical way to get one, although you'll need to know what to look for and be quick, they'll get stripped pretty quick.
Whilst there is no obvious detriment to running without the VSS, it will throw a CE light if the VSS isn't fitted which is super annoying. Driving around with a warning light lit doesn't make any sense when it's so easy to resolve.

Thanks for the reply. At the moment it seems people selling Balenos don't want to actually sell them. Very sloppy replying to communicate despite me agreeing to their price and trying to line up a concrete time to inspect and buy.
