Hi guys,
I have an 83 sj40 and was wondering if I can swap an 85 sj50 body onto it? Are they both NT?

Yes, they are both NT but that’s not relevant for fitting the body.

Two of the body bolts are in different locations between the models- the ones on the inside near the trans tunnel and rear mounts of the front seats.

The sj50 studs are longer and the sj50 body runners aren’t compatible with the sj40 chassis, so you may have to make a small body lift for the studs to work.

The sj40 is extnetally regulated, the sj50 has no provision for an external regulator

You’ll need to tap a barb on the inlet manifold for the sj50 brake booster

Gear lever cutout and boot are in the wrong spot

The looms and wiring are substantially different.

Anything is possible but it’s a bit of a messy job.

The 40 body is rusty as buggery. Have just about finished a rebuild of the 1 litre. So the flip side of that is can I chuck my 1l in the 85 instead?

Well mines an sj51 and it's got a 1.3. I thought SJ50 was NT 1.3, whereas SJ40 was NT 1L?

And SJ70 is WT 1.3

roughly, but there was a crossover period around ’88 where 50’s come out WT and some various other bits. I can’t comment on whether or not all SJ50’s were 1.3

My SJ50 says Sj50’s are 1.3. My SJ40 says sj40’s are 1.0 litre.

Funny how much difference a bit of punctuation can make.

No, sj50s have a 1.3l engine

VS

No sj50s have a 1.3l engine

Leaves it very open to interpretation.

Similar to;

I helped my Uncle Jack, off a horse. Vs;
I helped my uncle jack off a horse.

Punctuation is king :)
