i think portals are probably alot better suited to high traction surfaces

With the axle housing on the ground the tyre is below its horizontal centreline radius. For the car to be recovered forwards it must travel vertically up.

The more wheel travel the car has the bigger this problem becomes, although in soft terrain that's not relevant. I've seen two Mogs bogged in soft ground that needed respectively a tracked engineer vehicle and two Mack wreckers to recover them because of this effect.

Whilst the potential ground clearance is cool, as is the reduction gearing taking load off the rest of the driveline, they aren't a cure all for capability.
