I'd been pushing the Vortex basket beyond its purpose for some time and finally broke a roof rail foot late last year. Since then I've been making a new rack that will suit many needs.

The old Vortex basket which was clamped directly to the roof rails

Initial design had the light bar mounted under a simple low profile frame. I wanted an overhang on the windscreen to add a visor of sorts. Plywood floor to save on weight.

Amended the light bar mount and stepped the front of the rack

Long items are no longer an issue

Final rack now has a Gal mesh floor, I liked the plywood but long term was going to prove problematic

Accessories mounting brackets for either side plus an LED mounted in each foot

The awning will always be mounted on the passenger side

Plenty of room left after the bag is up there

Thinking of doing one for the Vitara . How do you like the light bar positioning when its in use.

It's actually better than expected. Yes there's a bit of light that hits the bonnet but not the full beam so quite acceptable. No light flare of the windscreen at all.

I've been making a new bed base rear storage set up.

I wanted to get it lower to achieve more headroom plus make it a bit easier for our dog to jump in. I also wanted to have access to the two side compartments and the jack compartment. Final aim was to reduce weight significantly, this new setup is about 1/3 the weight of my previous setup.

Image

This one has a flip over mattress base instead of the slide of the previous version. I've kept the access into the compartment fairly simple with just a hatch under the hinged lid.

The bed flip can also double as a cargo barrier

All packed away
