since everyone is on the big diffs and lwb bandwagon i though i might as well joint.
just thinking of the ider of putting hilux/bundy diffs under my zook.
just want to know roughly what is involved and how much fabrication needs doing. mainly conserned on steering and brakes and adapting the driveshafts.

haha yer i looked at his build.it doesnt look that hard. I might send him a pm to answer a few questions. Do you still use the zook diff center? See people only get the housings? Just need to find a car for work while this is off the road.hmmmm might take 2weeks off. 2weeks enough?

People look for the bundera rear housing and axles only because they take the hilux diff center that you can nearly get for free..

Generally the bundy stuff is dearer than lux but the reason people use the bundy rear is because it has an offset 3rd, matching the offset driveline of the sierra.
Hilux rears have the 3rd in the centre causing driveshaft angle issues.
Also the bunderas have a few different sized rear carriers and bearing meaning that they aren't all interchangable with hilux centres.
Best to get a matching pair of bundy diffs from a donor car and use them.

i know bunddy has the offset. Could somone clear up what axel and diff centers are used. I assume the brakes match the zook brake lines?

i think i have seen an adaptor on lowrange or trail tough for the t case to match the original shaft of the hilux diff. should be the same for the bundy gear, or you could get new shafts made up.

the wide track sierra and the lux are the same bolt pattern as im using lux tail shafts on my LJ there is a little bit of griding to make the two fit up but they will go.

I am machining my own adapter plates which is easy enough. Or about $50 bucks each from lowrange.

just to confirm so far. Rear is direct swap apart from shafts? The front need steering sorted? I see on low range a kit but will that suit rhd?

i think low ranges kits do right hand drive. but have a search around for a walk through on how to do this mate. it is not simple

Hi Brendan. You seem to be trivialiszing this diff swap.
There is nothing simple or straight forward about it.
You will need to address many issues such as spring placement, brakes, driveshafts, track width, steering arms and geometry, etc.
Do you plan on running coils like most bunderas do? Or are you going to run leaves? SPOA? SPUA? Suzuki springs or other? The zook springs will be under a much larger load with the extra unsprung weight of these diffs.
There is alot of fabrication and careful thought required to do this mod PROPERLY.
Also worth considering is that the high pinion bundera front has different knuckle arrangement and may not allow the fitment of the lowrange RHD steering arms. But you shouldn't need it anyway.
If you are running lux front and bundy rear it is possible to match the diff ratios as both came with 4.55 and 4.88's. You will have to check this when buying mismatched diffs.
Can I ask what you hope to spend doing this mod?

probably stay with zook springs. SPOA. lux front with a bunddy rear.
brakes well im asking about that. will the zook brake lines suit the hilux and bundy diffs? i do understand there is some fabrication but by the look of it nothing i cant handle.
cost? i will be engineering it so no short cuts.
but i think its going to be around the 2g mark all setup and engineered. no including tires

I priced it all out to cast about 5g, done properly and once, do you want to know where that money comes from?

brendan wrote: 5g? i somhow dont think thats right. thats a bit much It will cost you over a grand to rebuild the diffs with new bearings, seals etc. Thats half your budget gone already... So much as a weeping seal and the engineer won't pass it.

ok so here is where my money will go,
LUXs diffs for complete $600
Brake lines $200
Shocks RS9000 $800
coils $30 cheers matty
steel for control arms $500
Steering links $600 (this is so you get all your turning cicrle back)
jonny joints $ 480 (end of control arms)
rebuild diffs $500
tyres and rims $1200 (thats a cheap second hand set of 35s)
And $900 for engineering,
all up $5810
If you stick to SPOA and zook springs with all the cheapish parts,
Lux and Bundy $600
Brake lines $200
Shocks RS5000 $560
Steering $600
Tyres $1200
diff rebuild $500
engineering $500-700
all up $4260
Im not trying to make it seem like its alot of money but it is, i remember reading in "zookenator"'s thread where he said it cost a heap more than expected...

i am sort of hoping to keep my shocks for now but they will probably need longer ones due to extra droop in the diffs.
its a bit of money im just thinking if its worth doing to a SWB? its not somthing im going to rush into and when axel brakes then i will get my shit together and look for some diffs
Brake lines $200-guessing that all new brake tubing on the diffs? and ataptors to suit zook rubber hoses?
tires im not too worried as yet but they will come.

you will need wheels straight away, even if you can still re-fit your current tyres.
Keep in mind that a lux on 33's has the same diff clearance as a zook on 31's, so you will need atleast 33's to match your current clearances.

also hilux width track sort of farks up a major advantage that sierras have standard they dont fit in the rutts of all the other 4wds but at hilux track width they do fit in the ruts and with larger diff center hilux has your going backward badly in trems of clearance unless your running 35-36's and that only gets you back to the clearance of the 32's you have now on sierra diffs.
seens like a lot on money to tip into a car to get less clearance.
you should just buy a lux
