Honest question- why are drop/scissor shackles less popular than they were in the late 90's?

For the same reason the Spice Girls are less popular than they were in the late 90's.... they suck.

Would't that keep them popular?

Can I put drop shackles on top of my coils? A friend of mine said it would be awesome and it would make the car really well balcened if I don't run shocks either. Is that true?

They're series III land rover jacks, running passive. It also runs drop boxes on the front of the rear springs so the whole spring swings down when drooped.

I hate talking about Bills car in relation to drop shackles/uncontrolled travel though basically because Bill has spent 30 odd years building the car around it. The reason it works is exactly the reason throwing some scissor shackles on a Sierra doesn't. Also, the compromise of building a car to remain stable with such high articulation and uncontrolled travel is almost no compression travel. Crossing a fallen tree square on you'd swear it has no suspension at all, but crossed up
It's plush. Bear in mind though, it rarely exceeds walking pace.

Steve.

Still looking for an answer as to why one bloke in Queensland is the only person left who still thinks drop shackles are tops. Riley/james/twiggy whoever you are- you're clearly connected with the little bubble of drop shackle love that's died out everywhere else.

And "James", if you are looking at that photo of the lj80 and think the distance the front wheel is in the air has anything at all with its likelihood of rolling, you probably dont have enough knowledge of vehicle behaviour to defend drop shackles.

FKNLOL... This thread delivers, something. Not sure what, but there is a shitload of it!

Oh wait, this thread delivers the fail. Trying to get technical info from a 14yo, sure makes for many lol's. Good old school holidays, we haven't had one for ages since the invention of failbook.

Exactly "James" you're not looking at how far the other tyre is
compressed. A balanced and capable car is a car that's stable and predictable whether it has a wheel in the air or not. A poorly setup car could have all the wheels on the ground in the spot yet still be unstable- and that's the problem with uncontrolled travel- it's wheel movement without improved stability.

And is therefore no more capable. So what's the big deal with drop shackles?

What choo talking bout willis?

That's completely different, need for a sway bar depends on build choice, and packaging/placement.
If the shock fully extended length exceeds the length of the coils at full extension, then yes it would allow it to be unrestrained and the axle would just flop down, on its own weight, offering little to no stability, whilst looking super flexy.

Running coils that are restrained at one end with extra long shocks would be comparable to drop shackles.
How many coil cars run that shit?
