may be a noob question just wondering if anyone can help I'm trying to install a locker in my rear diff I've removed drums ,tail shaft that big ass bolt after tail shaft now I'm stuck i can't get axles out and I'm not sure how to get to the c clip as the third member won't come away can anyone help me its a 1996 sierra thanks in advance

So the axles wont come out? Have you taken the 4 nuts off behind the drum?if you have, then you have to "slide hammer" the axles out. Will go into more depth if you have taken those 4 nuts off

na i havent i didn't think i had to oops ,once i get centre out i think ill take it to my mechanic to install locker ,thanks mate

Hmm, you probably should have done a bit more research before you got carried away undoing things there - if the pinion bearings and seal were sound, the last thing you should have done was undo the pinion flange nut. You've now lost preload and will need to set the pinion up with a new crush sleeve - money and time wasted.

As per swifty - you'll need to undo the brake had lines to the drums, remove the 4 backing plate retaining nuts and with a slide hammer (or with the car well supported on chassis stands, use a wheel and tyre loosely attached) knock the axles out.

Then you can remove the third member retaining bolts and prise the third member out.

You can use the drum on backwards or even the wheel to help pull out the axle if the 4 centre bolts are done up
