your going to get charged import duty on something that big as you will pay more than $1000 all up.

you also pay GST on it aswell.

I'd suggest it'd be better to simply get a local fab place to make them up for you.

For the record, I would happily pay $600 for a pair of decent sliders for my GV.

I bought a rear bar, tow bar and swing away tyre carrier from lowrange. It was at least 500000 times better then anything
available in Australia. Cost me $1600ish when the exchange rate was $1.25au to $1.00us. That included airfreight to a very
remote part of Aust.

So does it matter what you buy as long as its under $1000 or is the size of the item the issue?

Value. $1000 of value and you pay duties and GST on the whole lot, freight included.

It does also depend on the size of the item, as that will dictate the carrier used to bring the item in to the country.

Postal services like Au Post or USPS are allowed to show each parcel as an individual consignment, with an AU$1000 limit before tax and duty is applied. If your item is too bulky or heavy for Postal carriage, then the delivery will be done by a courier. Customs treat each container (with a total value of $100,000s of separate packages) as one single consignment and will levy tax and duty on the whole lot by value. The courier will then apportion the tax bill to each recipient based on value. DHL do this, as do UPS.

Protesting that your delivery is under is under the limit and not liable for the tax won't wash, as they have actually paid the taxes. The exemption for tax and duty under $1000 IS NOT written in law, but it is put in place by regulation as the effort and cost of calculating the taxes on a small consignment and then collecting it actually costs more than the taxes are worth. Customs are a Federal body and GST revenue just goes straight to the States, leaving the Feds out of pocket. Eg GST on a $600 order is $60, this goes to the states, but the cost of compiling the paperwork and collecting the money exceeds $60.

Not surprisingly, it is the States (along with AU retailers) who are leading the push to have the $1000 exemption on GST removed!

If the goods are wholly manufactured in the USA and the shipper (low range offroad in this case) provides a certificate of Origin with the goods when they ship, you won't have to pay the duties. I can email anyone a standard template for the AUSFTA declraration if they want it and your supplier in the states is willing to fill it out and send it with the goods.

you don't pay duty until the goods hit the 1000aud mark and shipping is not inc in this value, but make sure the shipping cost is listed separately to the goods
