Hello all,
I have just bought a 92 SWB vitara that I plan on doing up. It has an issue with the gear box not selecting gears properly. After driving it home on the high way it definitely needs at least another gear.
I have done some searching and have found reference on an American forum that an AW372L transmission is 4 speed and is mechanically controlled so I won't need an ECU and is essentially the same version of the current box just with different bell housing and transfer case and slightly longer.
I am wondering if anyone has tried to swap the 3 speed for a 4 speed in a vitara before and if anyone knows if the AW372L is available in Australia. I have found mention that this box was in early pajeo's, can anyone confirm this for me and which model/s it is in?
Also I have been trying to find out if the box in the LWB vitara of the same vintage is ECU controlled? I know the later models are I am just not sure about the earlier models. I think the change over was around 94 from what I have read.
If anyone knows of any other boxes that might be suitable for this then please let me know. I need to get this sorted in the next couple of weeks so I can sell the car this is replacing so any help that can be given would be great. I know a manual would probably be a better way to go but I need an auto for my wife.

ok, I have done a lot more reading on the subject over the last day or so and have found some helpful information.
Basically my options are as follows; 1. Find a non-electronically controlled box and switch and adapt to fit. From what I have read, a lot of work for not a huge amount of gain but is doable. 2. Fix the box I have and live with it. I have found some info on common issues and quick fixes for them so I will probable give this a go for the short term until I can get another solution sorted out. 3. Buy a wrecked 4 door auto and swap everything over. Again sounds like a lot of work but a bit more doable than the first option, possibly cheaper too. I would get a slightly better engine and box out of it so worth looking into for the future I think. 4. Swap in a vitara 4 speed auto and set it up for manual shifting. The idea at the moment doesn't really excite me much but is growing on me. I have read that it can be a good set up for off road but can take some getting use too on road. If I could get this to work with a shifter in the usual location, rather than push button or rotary switch then I think it may be worth looking into for the future.
I would really appreciate peoples feedback and experiences with these options, especially the manual shifting set up.
