Thanks mate.

Quick update on the drawers. Been quite a while installed and still working a treat. No sagging or anything and still just as good as it was when I fitted them. I keep them fully loaded at all times also.

Awesome build! Im not exactly skilled with wood but this has inspired me to give it a go! Do you have an estimate of the weight of this build? the frame and top together?

Maybe about 20kg at a guess. It's not that heavy.

hey mate, i just bought a 2011 jimny, (havnt even picked it up yet, soo excited to mod it)
love these draws, how much do you think you spend total build though? were you tempted to leave those little pockets on the sidewalls exposed through the top board?
would you change anything if you did it all again?

Total build would be a guesstimate around 200-300 maybe less. I had spare plywood floating around and got cheap carpet. Also depends how cheap you get slides. Mine were 70. All the ally extrusion was the most expensive cos I went to bunnings. Goto capral for that I discovered. I wouldn't change a thing in the build. The pockets are tiny when you place the top panel flush on top of them, was going to put flaps in there, but the Lost space on top moving things around to suit doesn't make it worth it, this way I have lost unusable space and gained useful space, if that makes any sense.

I encourage you to make your own design. My needs don't necessarily match your own.

yeah i do love it though, i wanna try make a 1 sided one (drivers side) but 2 shelves high, an put a fridge slide on the left with a duel battery setup infront of it with my amp/sub maybe. cant wait to start measuring things up and get into it!
nice find on the slides too.

I thought of doing that too Joel. Actually I considered all configuration options... 2 drawer horiz, 2 drawer vert, 1 drawer side, etc etc.

This is the config that I came up with that holds the most amount of useful space whilst wasting the least amount of space. More drawers = more lost space from slides, framework etc etc.

Big drawback in doubleheight drawer is that you dont have much room on top. Are you able to utilise the space over your fridge if you do this? if not... wasted space. And if you ever take the fridge out to fit bulky items in the back. Its still very awkward back there without taking drawers out.

The way I figure, get the fridge as high as possible, fit a fridge slide, and that space is used well. Im quite tall so getting in it is not an issue, i dont know how you stand ;)

Have a careful think about your usage before you dive in. Your idea may suit great, but depends on how you use your car really.

mmm good points all round there, i stand 6'3" :P so i dont think i'll be needing a ladder either. definitely a slide though! seeing as with a fridge up top like that the lid would hit the roof without just short of a beers height knowing my luck and id die of thirst!

ive got a cargo barrier in my beasty so stacking shit high wont bother me much, though i do kinda like having use of a rearview mirror...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so much to consider! haha. might even go the single draw like you but with only 700mm deep draw and have the box go the full way in with a lift top lid up the front end should i need to get into battery / amps / compressor area.

my jimny will be used for camping trips and day trips up the tracks. very little actual road use. thinking rooftop tent too. if i can afford it.

I was going to have a shorter depth with a compartment up front, but instead of lift up flaps on the top surface, have them on the front face of the unit. ie, behind the seats, either one big hinged flap or 2 smaller ones behind each seat with magnetic latches (this is what I was originally planning, but it all got too much, and the drawer would be tiny as a result) . Heaps of room for titbits and amps etc then. I'm as tall as you. So I recommend my method, maybe with compartment as mentioned. As long as you avoid stacking shit on the fridge, it should be good. The height mine is at is perfect, I can open the fridge a crack without needing to slide it out to grab a beer, so I don't disturb anything resting against the fridge. I only need to use the slider to get food out or load shit into it.

Added bonus, It also slides out the perfect distance so the roof of the car acts as a fridge door stopper and I rest the fridge door back on the rubber weather seal.

To put it simply, I wouldn't change a thing of the design I have now. And it's been fitted quite some time.

done my draw :)
as I have a cargo barrier I'll go lift top lids for the front bit. I got 680 deep 750 wide 250 tall finished dimensions. :) total cost $222

Hey mate really like what you have done with your draw system looks awesome.
Just question do you have the dimensions of the qubelok frame you made ? the length x width x height ?
and what thinkness timber you use for your false floor?

Cheers

Hi Scales,

I am just going through the process of making a similar set of drawers, only question i have is did you secure the false floor in any way?

I note you cannot see from the pictures any bolts going through the false floor...Are they there and just can't see them?

Or did you just rely on the fact the drawers will be bolted into seat mounts and that would hold it all in place?

Thanks

Matt.

Two bolts into seat holes. That's it. Works well and is solid

Sounds good :) any suggestion on how to line up where to drill the hole in the plywood for the bolt to go through to seat holes?

Put bolt in hole and knock wood down on it to make an impression. Go from there. Don't hit too hard

The frame bolts to the floor by the way. So bolt that down before you put it in the car. And use some panel washers to spread the load out so that they don't pull through the soft aluminium.

For my drawers the jack is still in the standard location, 1 draw 300mm wide, another that is about... 230mm? I simply open the wider drawer, stand beside the drawer and open a hatch that sits over the top of the two drawers (900x250mm) if that makes sense?

I also made sure the false floor that sits under the drawers did not cover over the jack compartment so it's still accessible in that regard.

Another thing to think about is water storage if doing long trips.
.I am now wishing I had made space either in the front of drawers for say a 40l water container, or made the drawers less tall, and adding a flat water tank under the drawers. My draws are about 280mm deep.

Currently I manage to keep 2x 5 litre water containers under the passenger seat along with a few water bottles which is good for short trips/day trips. (Also managed to fit 1100mm tred recovery tracks behind driver/passenger seat....just....)

I went and bought a large battery tray and bottled this to the top of the drawers to allow me a spot to safely tie down the 130ah battery when traveling. I also have a custom dual battery tray with a 40ah excide battery under bonnet so can use that for general day trips for running fridge etc etc...

Will try and get a photo later on

Hi Scales, I don't suppose you've still got this and/or you're in Townsville still? I pick up my Jimny this week and I'd love the opportunity to check out your build before attempting my own. Cheers!

How are the draws holding up if they are still in use today, would have you done anything different?

Cheers
