G'day all,

We all know how pathetic the standard stereo system is in the Jimny. So in desperation of having a stereo i could actually hear and use I set out to replace it. After some searching on this and various other forums I found a lot of people had suggestions on what audio gear to use but not a clear how-to.

Keep in mind this is not necessarily a sound system i would recommend but not bad when working on a budget. I also wanted to go for the cleanest finish with minimal cutting drilling or bending.

I started with the front speakers. Removing the kick panels was very easy. Just a matter of removing the door sill guard and then the trim clip in the kick panel and it pulls away.

Image
Kick panel.

To my horror these were the speakers i discovered and removed.

Image

The standard speaker holes will accept a 4" speaker with no problem. They may accept a 5" speaker but i could not find one that would fit without either using a spacer or modifying the mount holes. I replaced them with a pair of Jaycar Response Precision 4" kevlar speakers.
While i was replacing the front speakers I also decided to fit a pair of the same 4" to the rear. (I will post a how-to on rear if requested but i did find one on another forum.)

With the four new speakers the sound system was starting to sound a lot better. This new setup didn't last long though as the limited functionality and power of the stock head unit was annoying me.

Here in lied a huge problem as it seemed no one made a fascia kit for the Jimny. I didn't want to spend upwards of $400 on a cheap looking ebay brand head unit just to maintain a clean look. Besides I already had a perfectly good bluetooth Pioneer 1 DIN head unit which would leave me space to fit a UHF in dash and not have to make up a mounting system for elsewhere. I did come across the topic from 'cammac' which showed that the fascia kit from 'AudioExpress'. I took the Suzuki part number from the supplied Audio Express kit to my Suzuki dealer and, sure enough, I had a genuine Suzuki fascia kit in my hands within a few hours. It only cost me $103.

Image

So i set out removing the old head unit.
Image
Just pull it off. There are 6 clips, three on each side. The silver edging is screwed on from the back and it comes away with the main piece.

Image
Lighter socket plug.
Image
Hazard Light plug.

Image
The trimless dash.

I removed the Silver edge pieces that are held on by a few screws each side.
Image

The lighter socket is tricky to remove.
Image
you have to push this black tab while trying to slide the metal part towards you.

Image
Once the metal socket is out the plastic retainer is removed by pushing in the plastic clips on each side while removing it.

Image
Back of the hazard switch which is removed by pushing the top and bottom tabs and feeding it through the panel.
Image

Image
The airvents also push out with a bit of encouragement.

Image
The two fascias. Replacement on the left.

Then transfer the stuff from the old fascia to the new one.

The next step is to change the head unit which i don't have photos for yet but i will try and put some up soon.
The cradle that holds the head unit slides out after removing the four screws that retain it. Then unclip the harness and antenna.
For the vehicle to ISO harness i found the Aerpro APP071 suited my Jimny standard wiring. To fill in the spare space below my 1 DIN head unit i used a universal 1 DIN pocket i had lying around at home.

Here is the result once wired up tested and installed.

Image
Image

The sound is a lot better than the factory sound. Obviously it is not a high end audio system. Though, without spending huge money on an amp, nicer speakers and a sub, i have still managed to get a lot better sound system.

With a bit of previous experience in fitting car audio this was pretty easy and took me less than a day to complete.

Let me know if this was helpful or if you need more info on any part.

Hello Wack_Will89,

I have played around in my youth upgrading car stereo and like yourself decided that my mighty little tank deserved more stereo teeth ;)
The console itself looked imposing to remove without potentially getting it all scratched up. My other problem was the weird shape face plate, ... so in response to your post yes it has been invaluable in providing information on how to successfully negotiate the upgrade, and thank you so much sharing it :)

I am planning to replace the existing head with a Pioneer which no CD but has BT, USB and front audio in for a hand held UHF radio when I convoy. The latter to me is important as I won't need to mount the UHF in the vehicle I can pull it out when needed and sit it in the phone cradle.

http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/2 ... /page.html

My mini tank is fully optioned minus a bull bar and winch.

Thanks again !!

Wow!

I have been thinking into upgrading my stereo, but the facia was missing! I have used Suzuki EPC and my car's VIN number and the # i get for the instrument panel is 73821-76J10-5PK. All you saying is that i can order direct from dealer using 73821-76J00-5PX and i get this new facia?

cheers mate, thank you

I wanted a bit more punch out of mine so I opted for some 6x9's in a custom panel. It came out pretty good I think.

Good to see the upgrade. I am yet to put a better head unit in to replace the old Sony Explode and then tackle the front speakers.

Previous owner had these installed and work very well. JBL 6x9's. The only problem with this is the speakers getting jammed up on stuff I put inside. May have to move them somewhere else??

Are the front speakers all 4" across the Jimny range? If so then I will get a decent set of them and go from there.

As my fascia is a lot different to the newer Jimny's, I will have to look at seeing what will fit / work but this thread is a good starting point.

Me too! I have been wanting to do exactly this but was put off by the high price of the new facia. So I just order this part from a Suzuki Dealer? Fantastic. I am doing this on Monday.

Great write up and thank heaps for sharing this.

You used part number 73821-76J10-5PK. The one Wacky Will89 used was 73821-76J00-5PX. I got the impression that the PX one was the European DIN sized facia and the PK one was the Australian version. I am a bit confused now. Can either of you clarify for me which number is the European facia, the one on the left in Wacky's photo.

Thanks

73821-76J00-5PX is a typo.

There are 3 Jimny fascias available:
73821-76J00-5PK - Double DIN
73821-76J10-5PK - Double DIN
73821-76J20-5PK - Suits stock head unit

This photo (from above) shows the 73821-76J00-5PK fascia on the left and the 73821-76J20-5PK fascia on the right.
Image

The 73821-76J10-5PK fascia has a slightly different double DIN opening to the 73821-76J00-5PK. This is a 73821-76J10-5PK:
Image

I have the 73821-76J00-5PK and found it didn't fit either of my DIN sized accessories as the cut out was slightly too narrow for a neat fit.

Thanks Tim. I wonder what the difference is between 73821-76J00-5PK - Double DIN and the 73821-76J10-5PK - Double DIN? I can see the difference in the photos but I wonder if the opening has the same dimensions in both.

This is the same setup I am putting in. Scored the new head unit yesterday for $60 plus a set of 4" 50w RMS speakers for the front. Just have to wait till I get back home to tinker.

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know if there are fascias to suit the 2000 Jimny or do I use the current one?

Just pull on the fascia and the clips release.

Wack_Will89 and all others that gave advice. I did this conversion late last year and very happy with the results. Would not have known where to start without the advice here. Thanks.

That looks to be the same fascia as is fitted in my 2006 but I need an aperture 178x100 to fit an Android unit, does either of those have that size hole?

Rhinoman, my replacement one is 175mm wide by 102 mm high, give or take a mm. Definitely not 178 mm wide though. However, you might be able to fit the unit just behind the facia as the opening behind is wider.

I emailed a seller I found on line and they reckon that they can supply something with a 178x100 aperture, I'm waiting for them to get back to me again with the details. In my Mazda Bongo I have a double-DIN unit with Sat-nav, SD card and a bunch of other features built-in. The stock Jimny unit doesn't seem to do a lot compared to that! I'm also planning on writing an Android app to get the enhanced diagnostics (what you call OBD1 in Aus) on the unit.

I wonder if you have come across the fellow in the UK that wrote the Torque application? He seems to have that stuff under control. His name escapes me.

By the way I thought the one I got was a standard double DIN. Maybe there are different interpretations of the standard as there are in so many other areas.

Has anybody worked out which, if any, of the many bluetooth ODBII units, are compatible with the Jimny protocols?

If its not OBD2 then none of them. Suzuki use a proprietary interface and add a limited OBD2 interface where its legislated.

I have used two different bluetooth devices now and they both work on my 2009 Australian model. As long as the data presents on the same wires then the bluetooth will just transmit what it sees. It is then up to the application that is reading the data to interpret it correctly. I am not sure if the wiring of the OBD plug differed from OBDI to OBD2 and that might make a difference.

In short I expect that all the bluetooth devices will work but the level of compatibility with the Torque application will determine what can be read.

Aus cars from 2006 onwards have an EOBD interface as well as a proprietary interface and any EOBD compatible interface will work. Prior to that only a proprietary interface is fitted. The diagnostic tool has to request data from the ECU; the ELM/Bluetooth interfaces convert the data from the Torque application (ELM protocol) to EOBD and the data from the ECU from EOBD to the ELM protocol, the tools don't support OBD1 protocols.

EOBD/OBD2 is intended to monitor emissions performance only, for full diagnostics you need to use the proprietary interface. Its very frustrating trying to tune an ECU using OBD2!

Rhinoman - I can read and reset fault codes using Torque Pro. I also seem to be able to extract the readings from any of the sensors such as accelerator position, fuel flow, speed, engine temp, engine revs etc. I guess that is not what you mean by full diagnostics? Since the Bluetooth adaptor is only worth a few dollars I expected it was just passing the data and all the transcoding (if that is what it is called in the computer world) took place in the application. Thanks for the clarification.
