Hey guys. Me and the Girl were talking about doing some traveling. She wants a campervan. I wnat something that I can still hit the tracks with.

Basically I was wondering if a 2.7 gv would still be able to pull along a medium sized camper trailer as My sister has a camper trailer sitting in her back yard that has been there for 10 years or so. I probably wouldn't be taking the trailer down anything spectacular.

Would a GV just get flogged out carrying a trailer like that or should I steer away from a Suzi (I say this as I'm thrashing myself with a stick) and go a bigger 4wd?

I thought about a setting a budget for a commodore v6 conversion in a vitara but it seems like it will be well over my budget. I reckon it would be cheaper to do a conversion in a hilux.

How big is the sister's camper? Is it a camper trailer or full on sleeper?

Christover pulls a camper trailer around behind a 1.6, plenty of others with 2L. A 2.5 GV will be fine.

If the camper is over 1500kg economy would be shit in a gv.

I tow this behind the GV all the time. Its a 1980's Jayco Finch. Its weight is about 900kgs when its packed up with all the camping gear, annex, full water tank and jerry can. I can easily cruise at 100km/h in 5th on the flat and only need to drop back to 4th for the hills and to overtake. Economy is reduced but i can still get 350-400km and thats not driving like and old woman........ And this is with the 245/75/16 muds and 4.8:1 diffs.

I towed a 700 kg trade trailer around for 4 years with a 2.5 Gv, i put 4.6 diffs in it. I now use a 3.2 Gv. Don't drive it hard and you'll be fine.

I tow a 5 metre Haines Hunter fiberglass boat with my XL7 no dramas. It knows its there but I don't reckon you would have any issues with a camper.

My 1.3 Jimny tows all sorts of loads. I'm sure a 2.7 would be fine so long as it's not a ridiculously heavy trailer.

Tow the camper trailer up to 6 hours at a time and through soft sand regularly. 350-450kg depending on how long we are going for and often with a passenger or two as well plus a load on the roof sometimes.

Image

Towed this for 3.5 hours on Saturday but it's light compared to the usual load.

Drive sensibly and don't expect to accelerate or decelerate as quickly as usual. Drive like a truckie would and coast towards red lights so you can time it so you don't have to stop... hopefully anyway

We live in an old bus converted to a motorhome and tow our Jimny. Best lifestyle change ever (and we are not old and grey)

my 2.7 Pulls my camper trailer fine, weighs 750KG standard around 900 or slightly more when loaded petrol economy works out to be 14.6L/100K

Thing that killed it was heading into a oncoming wind that made fuel econ go up to 16.7L/100K

Ive towed a 4ton tandom braked trailer for 300K no issues at that weight was using close to 18L/100k but still felt it could pull more. But its something i dont recomend. the 2.7 is one strong motor, and if get the XL a double size matris fits in the back ;)
