How did this all turn out?
I'm trying to work out which way to go with the baleno motor install in my sierra. Whether or not to keep the baleno speedo (have to use tacho) and try to install the vss from the baleno gearbox (auto box) somehow in the sierra driveline, OR just go with the old tried and true jrzook sierra vss mod and signal the ecu off that.
Would be nice to have some kind of digital dash though wouldn't it!

I'm in the same boat. Run Baleno white/black tacho with sierra orange black speedo for legality? Yuck.
My last one with baleno speedo face/vit vss odo worked out to be about the right speed for sierra, 3.7 and 32's But the odometer wasn't legal.
Full digital would be cool, but id be happy with a VSS with % adjustable speed ratio and odometer for legality.

Good to see someone putting there Microprocessor knowledge to good use. I cant really remember that level of programing, been 14years lol. But was thinking yesterday using a Inline fuel flow meter that sends out pulses, put one on the fuel pump line and one on the return. Take the pulses from return line and subtract it from the pump line and calculate fuel usage, obviously it would be per hour, but with the data on your VSS could work out L/100k Think you could easily do it for all us ausi suzuki owners that dont have obd2 and want to keep track of fuel ussage, could even go one step further and calculate how many Liters and K's left in the tank If did would be first on market Non OB2 trip computer. Could factor in: Coolant temp, Bat voltage, Air Temp etc etc as well. But thats going overboard http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Fuel-Flow-Se ... 2ec01bd3e4

the only issue I can see is wether DOT/police would accept your version of "calibrated" or notI know a lot of factory vechiles speedo are out by up to 10% to 12% +/- variance and police prey on that. I know a lot of ppl who use their gps and or phone app as a speedo for more accurate speeds. However, Cops don't like that and fine drivers for it. Some excuse of using a non dot compliant speedometer. I personally believe if its calibrated of gps, it's got to be more accurate thet a standard factory setting.

Among all my other projects and the PhD I just haven't had time for this one unfortunately. I did tho use the prototype on the bench to calibrate the stock sierra speedo to my tire size. That worked out quite well! Speed from ~40-100KPH is correct now, it's just the odometer that's out.
Calibration wise I don't think there is a more accurate way to do it bar measuring tire circumference and using the tcase output/diff ratio relationship. Obviously tire diameter will vary slightly due to pressure and wear but this will put you on the safe side of the speed limit, IMO a lot better than the other way around.
That fuel fuel sensor is quite interesting!

Bung something like this on top for a digi type tacho, could even build in the flashing for limiter? (Guessing a shift light function wouldn't be all that useful for most Sierras...) (That's an Aus built unit called Shift-i, mainly for bikes and drag cars, but the concept could be useful? http://www.ecliptech.com.au/) Looking forward to updates Dan!

What are the rules in Aus?

I've got something like that that I bought for my buggy. It does make it legal and its a clever drop in solution but I wouldn't want it on a daily driver because it is quite small.

I'd probably run the speedo and tacho so it works on the speedo side of the cluster, then run the normal tacho and gauges. Extra gauges/lights on that speedo will be annoying me if they aren't hooked up.

I've got the trailtech vapor on a cafe racer bike that I built. While its nice, its got some stupid features and bugs.
Firstly, when you turn the bike off, the backlight stays on for 5 mins, you cant override this, their response is "this is by design" so basically a big f%#@ you. Secondly, the RPM gauge works off a the pulse from the spark plug. You need to adjust it to get it right, but even when its right, its inaccurate. The speed is read with a magnet, you could put it around any thing that rotates really. Its fairly accurate.
Other than that, it works perfectly!
But I do agree, that building a custom jobby is just fun. Good work man.
