I am dropping the G16B into my Jimny. It already looks as though I need to swap a few bits over, have the BenT adapter kit etc so it should be pretty straight forward.

The big question is about the crank and cam sensors on the g16B. The G13BB only has a cam angle sensor on the back of the head but the G16B has both a crank angle and a cam angle sensor. Can I disregard the crank angle sensor (the sump swap means it cant be used anyway) and will it run on the G13BB computer that is already in the car? I read somewhere that I may need to swap the cam shaft over and use the 1.3 sensor and sensor body but if the 1.6 already has a cam angle sensor I dont see the point unless it works differently.

I also have to swap the intake manifold over due to the cooling plumbing differences between them. Should I use the 1.6 injectors or can I use the 1.3 injectors on the swapped 1.3 manifold?


The new engine looks good though. 109,000kms . Less kms than when I bought the Jimny in '07. I have been wanting to do this ever since I bought it.
At 233,000 the old donk is getting a bit smokey but still goes hard. Would be a good rebuild if anyone wants it.

Easiest way would be use the G13BB head and ancillaries on the G16 bottom end.

Very keen not to use the old head with slogged out valve guides and other wear from over 230kkms of abuse. The old cam should be ok so if I have to I will swap it but the old head is a bit too poked to be used on an otherwise perfectly good 1.6.

I personally haven't done this, but ill offer my opinion.

If you don't want to reuse the head (which will be the easiest way, as it guarantees it will work).
You could consider getting it rebuilt? (even DIY)


If you want to use the 1.6 head, you should swap the cam, and sensors (to ensure compatibility with the 1.3 ecu and loom)
Also the backing plate to block off the water outlet hole on the 1.6 head.

I would use g16 injectors (keep the g13 injectors just in case it over fuels with the 1.6 injectors), but all the other sensors and other efi components that are on the 1.3.

Then you can ignore the crank angle sensor (you may have to cut and shut your sump for clearance).

swapping the manifolds over solves most of the efi problems so that shouldnt be a problem. I'll use the 1.6 injectors

I was aware of the blanking plate for the water outlet, I have removed the thermostat housing from the 1.6 already. I still have to use the Jimny in the meantime so the transplant will be a weekend job (hopefully) in a couple of weeks. I wont be able to compare the cams until then but I will take photos and post up here.

I got a quote for engine overhaul as I think its is a bit beyond my capability and time, $2400 which is not unreasonable but a lot more than the 1.6 engine cost me.

OK, so I was a bit too greasy to take a whole heap of photos. Here is the back end of the baleno cam before I removed it, showing the two tags on the sensor wheel.



I havent got an image for the jimny one but it has little tags right around the sensor wheel.

In short, swapping the cams over was piss easy. 12 bolts hold the 6 journals on, once removed the cam lifts out without having to play around with the rocker arms. Apart from the sensor wheel the cams are identical.



The jimny sensor housing bolts up to the head and rear journal so I used that one although I think the baleno one would work too.

I didn't do this but I also had a recommendation to pull the sensor wheel off the cam and swap them instead but it is not obvious if the wheel and cam are one part or if the wheel is pressed on. There does not appear to be any timing mark or keyway so getting the wheel back on in the right spot might be a bit tricky. If I can pull the baleno cam apart I might swap them back again at some stage because the baleno cam was in pretty good nick. The Jimny cam was pretty good too, no scoring, so all in all not a bad outcome.

Still to do: sump, oil pickup, adapter on gbox, degrease everything, reassemble grasshopper.

This is the problem with these conversions and with these engines in general, Suzuki change the cam sensors around and its difficult to get a 1.6 to match a 1.3. I know of one person who did swap the trigger buit it wasn't easy and the cam needed machining as the wheel ID was different.
Use the 1.6 injectors.
