G'day

I just picked up my 1st sierra in about 10 years, it runs like a dream but its got a g16a with a 32/36 carby.

Now Im more of an efi kind of guy so I have been thinking about a few options, so far I have come up with 3.

1) get a suppercharger and new manifold kit for the 1.6

2) swap it out for a G13b

3) convert it to gas.

Either option would smooth out the carby feel and make it a better on road drive whick is what Im after as I will be doing more highway driving and my offroad stuff is limited large property tracks with soft mud and beaches as Im using it for fishing and shooting rig.

I also want to change the gears a bit so it has more top end road speed.

So who has tried any of these options and would recomend what?
Im leaning towards the G13b as thats what I used to have and I love the engine, but the 1.6 does have a lot more torque and I do like it atm.

For the cost of a 16b I could go the charger or go the 13b with a few mods, but it is a 4th option.

Wiuld something as simple as upgraded plugs, leads etc make much difference to the carby feel?

Plugs and leads wouldnt hurt if they havnt been changed in a while. IMO i would ditch the carby in the nearest river and go EFI OR look at a Gas/Propane system from the US for the Sierra motor.

easiest option G13BB, G13B is a carby engine.

Next would be the G16B.

Once you're actually up and going the carby isn't the issue, they really work well and come into their own in the slower stuff and on hills etc where carbies may experience issues.

If you're chasing high speed drivability is a Sierra the correct choice of vehicle. A bit of mud and sand with lots of highway miles may suit a Vitara better. Just throwing it out there.

Well I just bought the sierra so Im keeping it, besides its awesome.

I just want to sit on 100km easy and not have any lag. I have read up on gas and I like what I have read, with the rebate its even better and it will act like a efi. I just wonder about what size gas tank I could put where the fuel tank is as I dont want to loose space in the back.
That and re filling out bush.

If your carby G16a is in good order then sitting on 100km/h wouldn't be a problem. You should be able to sit on 130km/h with ease.

Yep, but I havent been on a highway yet just a few short 100 zones so I cant really judge the speed yet.

It is more a matter of my dislike of carbys more then anything, but I didn't want to spend a heap changing engins just yet I just wanted to see if there was an option other then the carby.

Im just about sold on a gas conversion atm, seems to have advantages for both cost per km and it would take away the carby feel and run better at low revs and with its pick up.

How much larger than standard? You would be quite surprised at the Rob of power from big tyres on heavy steel rims. I have a g16b in my Sierra. I thought it goes well until jrzook informed me that I once you put gears in it will be 10 times better!

I mesured up and I can fit a 55lt tank under it, if I get 12-14 lt/100km then I wont loose any range and when I go bush I can refill from bottles.
Now Im just trying to make sure that lpg will run well in it.

I don't think that there have been many successful LPG sierras that get driven on the road. Don't discount a efi g16. I payed $1200 for a vitara and that has given me power steering, 4 wheel disc brakes and a efi g16 and auto. Good value I think

Looking at the info, it says gas has an octane rating of 100+, which would open the door to a fair bit of timing advance. And you could run hight compression pistons as well, as seen here:http://zukiengines.com/1-6-8v/ Put that together, and it would go pretty well I would think? :D

Propane and LPG are the same, just yanks use a different name for it, Can use 2 forklift tanks in the back covered by a false floor or one of the smaller flat tanks that i have seen. I wouldnt reccomend putting a lpg tank on the outside of a 4x4. You could get the "GOT PROPANE" kit from lowrange for around $700 to $800 delivered. Gas works on any angle even upside down so you would never have any stalling issues on steep hills, plus Gas motors run a lot cleaner than Petrol motors, and your oil will be cleaner and cleaner after every oil change. If you have larger than standard tyres fitted then gears will help a lot in giving you more acceleration, better crawling ratio and getting 5th gear back for highway cruising.

G13B is DOHC 16v MPFI. (GTi motor)

G13BA ( coily motor ) is carby.

don't know but there are a bunch of them in Brisbane that do it, Im thinking about getting a gotpropane kit and having a local install it.
The tanks the issue as I dont want to loose space in the back, but I will call one and see what they can do.
