Yes, in fact neither my Sierra or the LJ had one when I bought them. Get one ASAP of course.

It actually depends on the vehicle & engine - I know of a couple that would cool on some cylinders, and overheat on others, leading to a seizure in short order - as the others have indicated, it should not be done long term, rapid engine wear will result.
