so I have a 40mm dobson lift and I want to know how much lift my cv's will take before a diff drop is needed, would they blow out at 60mm? do you have pics or have run at this height?

40mm - 50mm will be fine, 60mm & greater i'd be looking at diff drops.

yeah what im wanting to do is put 20mm spacers on top of my 40mm lifted springs to clear my 30" tyres do you think that would b ok? (so I would have 10mm spring spacers at the front)

put them in & if you're not happy with the CV angle buy diff drop brackets. :?

yeah true, or how would a strut flip, (do you know of a forum that shows me how to do this and is it strong enough? how much extra "stiff" travel does this give?) with a diff drop bracket and a one inch spacer lift front and back which would give me almost 3" (70mm) would this be stable? would I need to change the brake leads for this?

yeah i'd look at extended brake lines. there are a few on here that run that sort of set up, it should be fine.

You don't need 60mm of lift to run 30's. In fact, you don't need any lift at all.

What have you done about the "press in" driver's side inner axle? It's not the CV's you need to work about once you do the strut flip, it's the extra droop pulling the DS inner axle out of the diff, which will then stuff the CV. There's a few threads on here about replacing the driver's side press in axle with a tripod mount like the passenger side. This is more durable and faster to fix if you do trash a CV.

Less CV joint angle is always better than more. More angle=more chance of breakage and shorter life - it's a sliding scale, not a hard limit. a flat CV is a happy CV. They even transfer power more efficiently at flatter angles. (FWD drag racers know this and will move their whole transaxle to flatten the CV angles - they go faster down the 1/4 mile that way.)

These are my CVS at the moment and I think ill put a 10mm spacer on top. What do u guys think? I'm thinking ill take Atari's advice put them in then decide :P do u know where to get cheap diff drop brackets if I decide I need them?

btw i dont think ill do a strut mount flip so I shouldnt have to worry about the diff "falling out" (if thats what you call it) ??

That's what they look like now do u think they'd take the extra 20mm? (10mm spacer), Im also just wonering with spacers does it matter if they are un grooved or not?

Honestly though, I think you're slightly issuing the point. Regardless of the height, added lift means added disadvantages. There's not a limit where everything was fine and then all of a sudden you get problems. With a Vitara, I'd be running the car as low as I could, and I can't see why you need 60mm of lift for 30's.

How do you "decide" when your CV's are fine at the new height? When they fall apart? When the boots split? When they break really quickly?

I'll just reiterate, less is always better than more.

Ultimately, Atari has told you what you want to hear - put them in and try it - and that's fine, I guess - they're your CV's to wear out/break, but I don't see the point in running more angle on something than required to do the job.

As you haven't added any travel when you fit the spacers, you are just running closer to full droop all the time and probably loosing outright wheel travel as it seems that it's quite hard to get lifted vitaras onto the factory bumpstop. Do you really need 60mm more compression travel than a stock vitara? Are you suffering from excessive bottoming out at the moment?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a bit unsure of what you are trying to achieve with the extra lift.

Yeah thats cool mate,

If I get a big run up at a dune my back tyres touch the tops of my guards. so I thought this might be an easy way to correct this, if my Cvs could take the stress. My mates who all have hiluxes and land cruisers like to go to the flinders and go rock climbing and last time I went I scraped the abosoulute S%&$ out of my car so I wouldnt mind just a little more lift and I was going to add some armour underneath to try protect the front diff and that plate that holds/protects the drive shaft near the middle of the car. I thought with the added weight of the armour (and just the fact of getting it higher) I wouldnt mind the spacers to give an "unchangeable" distance between under my car and the ground/rocks.

so yeah thats where im coming from =P

Do you mean "back" as in rear tyres?

That means you need bumpstop spacing. More lift won't correct this. The axle will still come up just as far and the tyre will hit the guard before the axle hits the bumpstop, same as what's happening now.

Spacers don't give an "unchangeable" distance between the ground and the car, that's what bumpstops do.

You need bumpstop spacers rather than more lift.

Fit armour and live with the noises. You only have 30" tyres. If you're not dragging under the car you'll be dragging the back diff.

Actually, it sounds like I've implied that bumpstop spacing is only effective in the rear, that's not true - it will work equally well in the front. Obviously in a vitara, you only need 1/2 the spacing in the front you require at the wheel, same as for spring spacing.

Mate you have a Vitara, the ones I quoted you are the same as I sent you in that link. I have been selling spacers for over 10 years to 99.9% of 4x4 places and sell to a lot of people that sell on Ebay. I won't sell you wrong ones for your car :roll:
I have never seen so many posts and had so many pms from someone wanting to know about spacers before in my life.
If your not sure about them don't get them :wink:

can you do spacers that are 1/4 yellow & 1/4 blue & 2/3 orange
