Hey Everyone,

After having a search through the net and here i haven't really got an answer to my question so this is my first post.
I've decided to stick a new head unit in because the tape deck just wasnt doing it for me.

Thinking wiring it up would be straight forward i pulled out the old unit to find only 4 wires connected to it.
Black, White, Grey, Grey/Black.

My new unit's got the following-
Red - + 12v Switched
Black - Ground
Orange - Illumination Control
Navy - Power Antenna
Yellow - +12 Constant

White - Front Left (+)
White/Black - Front Left (-)
Grey - Front Right (+)
Grey/Black - Front Right (-)
Green - Rear Left (+)
Green/Black - Rear Left (-)
Purple - Rear Right (+)
Purple/Black - Rear Right (-)

So the purple and green wires are useless to me because i'm still factory standard with no rear speakers.
I'm assuming the black that was connected to the original unit is the earth (correct me if i'm wrong). Now i'm stuck when it comes to the last 3, i'm guessing one is a 12v.

Can anybody give me a hand with what i should be matching them up to on the new unit.
Or let me know if there's more wires floating around in the dash i need to find!

I have a mate that can hook it up but I really want to give it a crack before I admit I can't do everything myself!
I realise wires will need to be soldered etc and have all the stuff to do it (have a multimeter too). Just need a hand matching everything up.

Indeed black is earth. All I done with my install is simple and can be used on all stereo installs.

First thing is to find your earth. In this case black.

Now to find constant 12v supply. Turn your multi on and pop it on dc. Now with the black - probe place it on the black wire in the dash. Now using the red + probe find which of the 3 wires is putting out 12v with keys out of ignition. (car off, acc off) once found you now have your main power (memory)

Next is the switched power via accessories. Again place you black probe on the black earth in dash and using the positive probe make sure the other 2 wires are not live. Now turn on the ignition to accessories and check the wires again. The one showing 12v with acc on is you positive switched 12v.

Lastly is illumination. Here is up to you. You can choose to have the units backlight always lit while operating by tapping into the acc switched 12v or have it set for the headlight switch.

Check the last wire in the dash by Confirming 0v with light switch off and 12v with light switch on.

Have fun and good luck!

IMHO the biggest cause of electrical dramas in cars is people fitting stereos and trailer plugs and not getting it right.
Maybe go see your mate first and get him to run you through what you need to do then you can go off and try it and if you don't succeed go back to your mate.

Thanks so much for your replies.

I was pretty exhausted from a few long weeks at work when i wrote this question!
I managed to get some daylight so i could trace the wires back. The grey wires belong to my one front speaker, for some reason my zook only had the one speaker. I don't know if someone took the other out or if it was some strange standard thing back in '89!
I've found the where my black wire earths and i'm going to replace it with a longer wire as i have no room to solder with the current one.
I've got an arvo off work tomorrow so fingers crossed i can get it all hooked up and working.
I'm thinking of maybe buying new front speakers for it too. Does anyone know what size fits in the standard front cut outs?

Where abouts are you based? If in Adelaide I am happy to give you a hand.

With your GND make it as short as possible and make sure you sand whatever surface you are bolting it too. Factory GNDs quite often just rely on the bolt thread which is dodgy as all hell. Simplest and cheapest way is to get some eye crimps, sand the surface you will be screwing to thoroughly and then screw it tight.

I prefer the Ultilux crimps and it's all we use at work. I have tried other brands and they are never as reliable or crimp as nicely.
Something similar to these http://australia.rs-online.com/web/p/cr ... s/7254718/ or you can get the insulated ones but not needed in this case.

Don't quote me but I am pretty sure the front dash speakers are 4". You may be better getting some 6" coaxials for the doors if you are going to that much trouble. You will need to run new wires though.

Based in Adelaide Rob45x but thanks for the offer. Have a test light and the multimeter so hopefully have everything i need.

Thanks for the advice on the GND Poita. Finally have a weekend off next week so going to give it all a shot then. We've got all the auto shops down the road so i'll grab some new crimps too.
I've seen some really dodgy door speaker so was hesitant in giving it a shot. Might pull them out and take them in with me my partner did say it might be hard to get the same size again.

hey guys thanks for your help.
Finally got the chance to hook it all up today. Bought a wiring harness so it was easier to hook up than trying to findi each wise :)
Also got to try out my new soldering 'skills'!
