Hey guys.

I'm not wanting to put a 1.3l into my SJ40, just the "big case" gearbox (same as 1.3l gearbox) with a 5 speed gearset in it. I figure many more people have done this by putting the 1.3l and gearbox in, hence the title.

Short of cutting the trans tunnel out of a 1.3l tub, what does it take to put the big box into an early 1l with the small trans tunnel? I don't want to body lift it.

I figure this gearbox with it's lower 1st (the 3.1:1 first I have now is driving me nuts!) and over drive 5th coupled with 4.88:1 LJ50 diff gears will give me a better crawl ratio whilst maintaining good gearing for sand and a good high range.

Thanks

Hayden

Hey,

I'm pretty sure you can't use the g13 gearbox but if you get a type 3 1ltr gearbox or a maruti 1ltr gearbox it will have the same size rear housing as the 1.3 box and you can swap the gear set from the 1.3 box into the 1ltr box.

I don't know the ins and outs of this but I do intend to give it a try eventually, Benchai on here has done it and might be able to tell you the specifics of doing it.

Also apparently a maruti 1tr 5speed exists but I imagine these are hard to find, heres a link about rebuilding a gearbox http://nbs4x4club.com/forum/index.php?topic=12545.0

Hayden, I'd get a tape measure out and go over the 4 speed and then the 5 speed.
I think it will fit without any mods to the tunnel but not 100%

Yeah, I know about the gearboxes. I'm hoping to get a Maruti one and swap the internals from a 1.3l. :)

Thanks for the link, that's very helpful! :D :D That actually looks a lot more pain free than I thought it was going to be! I thought you'd have to fab a new cross member or at least modify it quite a bit.

I would be doing just that If I had a 5 speed. But it does look like it'l fit. :D :D Should be getting a SJ70 soon (just gotta man up and go and knock on their door....) so measurements away. :)

Yeah you don't need a new cross member, just a new mount and a 1.3 jack shaft. Hopefully I'll get around to doing mine soon so I'll let you know how it goes.]

Also in my talkings with Benchai I don't think he said he had to widen the tunnel.

Mine fitted in easy but I used the 1.3 motor as well.

This is just sounding way to easy. 8O Please do it and document it! My gearbox jumping out of second gear and high first gear are driving me nuts so I'd like to do mine ASAP too. :)

That's what I like to hear. 8)

It'll fit no problems. If you are going to adapt a type 3 box with 1.3 internals drop me a pm and I'll help as much as I can
