im planning on using some honeycombed security door to mount on the underside of the factory rails to keep everything low profile, cheap (i cant believe how expensice roof racks and baskets are!!!) and light weight. might be a bit annoying for washing the car but i can live with that.
anybody see any reasons this idea will fail?

The idea is a good one but I would expect that you might get some wind noise and buffetting with security mesh though and you will also need to make sure that it does not flex under load as it will eventually fatigue and fail if it does. Trial and error I guess. Worth a try in my opinion.

Yeah give it a go, but I'm with Mike on the strength factor. Maybe some sort of cross bars would be worthwhile.

e-van I left a question for you in your build thread earlier. Did you get your trip computer to work on your OBD port in your Jimny? I was thinking of buying one but it is only OBDII compliant. Royce and others tell me that the Jimny port is not OBDII so I was interested in your experience with it. Thanks.

Hi mate, Have you got a pic of the wood and sunshade or a close up? Sounds like a great idea. How have you set it up? cheers

With the rola vortex roof baskets I keep reading that they bolt straight onto the jimny's. I'm quite interested in getting one for my jimny. How do they bolt straight on with the universal mounts as it appears you need cross bars? Any pics would be fantastic.

I haven't seen any attached directly to the roof rail, I'd be keen to see one though. I didn't think to check for fittings

Here's the roof rack on my 1l. It's got a Parkside towbars sticker on it so I assume they made it. Looks like it used to have a basket mounted to it. It's bolted to the door hinges and tek screwed to the top of the tub on the back.

Opinions on what would be better for a hardtop sierra between a gutter mounted versus track mounted?
Gutter mounted doesn't require holes in the roof but the rails can crack, bend, etc. easier than what I think a track mounted system would. But still can't decide between them.

well here is my roof racks i just got from gumtree. Picked them up for $80, they were a bit long so i had to cut them down a bit. But they are tradesman brand or something, seem to be very strong. So far i have only used them for carrying a few fishing rods to bribie island. And this is my roof basket i made last weekend. A security screen door, some aluminium angle, a few welds, and a pop rivit gun. I havent actually tried the basket out yet (ive bolted it on and driven around the block). but going camping for 1 week tomorrow, so should give it a work out. I do fear that at about 180mm i have made the basket a bit high......but we shall see.

nope.
gets about half way under, then the driveway goes up and it hits. that was one major oversight in the design...
I could let the tyres down a bit i guess....
Although i have just had an idea looking at that photo. perhaps i can remove the basket and roof racks and then mount the basket to the underside of the roof rack (feed the roof rack through the basket before its on the car, then put both back on the car) and that will give me the thickness of the roof rack in height back. (about ~60mm). Roof basket is held on by 4 large u bolts, so it can be mounted this way. Wont be easy to put back on.... but ill give it a go this arvo.
