Well I'm requiring more power out of my carbie vit, and want to go the route of a coil pack 1.6 baleno engine (no dizzy please!). I have a couple of questions though... :)

Has anyone done this before? Does it require modified mounts? And how have people got around the coolant pipe on the back of the head? What radiators have been used? Will I require a different cluster? Does it bolt straight up to the tranny?

Sorry for all the questions, but I thought this forum would be the right place to start :)

The block is different. It uses a bottom sensor for the crank, and a cam sensor on the back of the head. So yeah.. Not possible. even if you were to get a head, your still missing the crank sensor..

If you were to go the coil pack baleno motor. They go good, and cheaperish. Depends how good you are fabricating. Check my buildup in my sig. and this link all to do with the motor

I wouldn't bother if i had a carb vit motor. I would just use a single point efi of a 1.6 swifty and adapt to suit. Unsure details about them though. Many people have done them.

Bluesuzy used that pipe and routed it around the passenger side of the engine. I read something about a thermostat housing off another Suzuki engine (maybe a 1 litre?) that fits on the back of the engine. If you go that route you'll also want to replace the water pipe that comes out the back of the water pump, you can just swap that over with a Sierra one. It would be more rooting around but at least you'd have the coolant hoses in the same place as the std engine.

Instrument cluster? No. The VSS sensor from the Vit can be installed into the Sierra speedo head, but i'm not sure if the same goes for the Baleno. In any case it should run without the VSS. In fact, I don't think it's going to make much of a difference. I was talking about this with Jnr Zook the other day, I think the VSS only assists with the control of stuff like exhaust gas recirculation.

Not a direct bolt up, but pretty close. Use the stock Sierra flywheel and clutch. The top 2 holes line up, though the thread size is different between G13/G16. On mine I just helicoiled the block and used the Sierra transmission bolts. The lower 2 bolts are a little different as they are spaced wider on the G16 block. I made some little brackets that pick up the wider mounts, they look a bit dodgy but they work fine. Easiest and cleanest way is to buy and adapter kit. $200 off ebay.

Well i was thinking of swapping the whole motor anyway, not just the head! I'm aware of the different block.. hence the engine mount question :P

Reason I wanted to go the coil pack motor is no dizzy to get wet, more power than a TBI and frankly TBI isn't even worth it.

Changing the whole motor is going to be easier fo sho.

I'm not 100% sure about the engine mounts, but I suspect they are the same as the Vitara, so no big issue. Hopefully Bluesuzy can confirm this for us? If they are the same as the Vit the passenger side mount is the same as stock G13. On the driver's side the mount sits 15 or 20mm fore or aft (can't remember!) of the stock position. A simple adapter sorts that, which is included in aformentioned $200 conversion kit.

Damo I'm not sure if you saw that I have a vitara with a G16..You were talking about G13s and sierra flywheels etc.. can I use my vitara bits? I'm assuming the box on the back of my G16 would have the same bellhousing pattern as the baleno block?

Yeah I did notice you said that, but went on about G13s anyway :lol: kinda like the difference between hearing and listening!

I'm guessing that the Baleno engine is going to bolt straight up to your Vit transmission. If it didn't i'd be very suprised. Same goes for flywheel and clutch. Engine mounts too, hopefully Bluesuzy can verify that for us.

Your Vit radiator will be fine. What I said about the coolant hoses/pipes still stands though.

Having said all that a Vit engine swap is going to be a lot easier. I know what you're saying about the dizzy but it's pretty rare to have problems with them because they are up high and at the back of the engine bay.

hmm... has it been done? Alternatively I could cross breed and go 3800i commo v6 hehehehe

EDIT: Actually I was just having a look at other engines in vitaras, it looks like the 2 litre DOHC 4 in the 1998 vitaras made almost as much power as the V6 (97kw or something vs 100kw) Obviously has torque differences but anyway... What are the differences between the late vitaras and the first ones? i.e. can i fit the 2 litre?

*I made a "fully" custom thermostat housing and water piping.
*Baleno should bolt up to vit box.
*My baleno motor is using sierra 5sp, sierra flywheel, sierra clutch
*Engine mounts stock 1.3, Pass side plate bit modified so hole is 20/25mm.. back. Drivers side is 10mm back i think, slotted back.

There is alot of info in my thread, to much to say now.

There is a fair bit of info on the 1.8/2L "J series" motors as well. But maily usa pages. There is also kits for them, again, usa sourced.

Unless, You go full drivetrain change! Much easier.

ALSO Dont go the 3.8 POS!!!

Hmm, trying to decide between the J20 and the Baleno 1.6....J20 is looking promising besides the random other bits required for the swap

Keep in mind, all my info is for a sierra...

A baleno motor doesnt have much more hp then the efi 1.6 vit motor.

I think if i wanted the j20 i would try and find a cheap motor and gearbox/transfer, and source a wiring harness and ecu. Then adapt everything else to suit. Could be a big job, and $$ for parts. Unsure how much 'J' motors let alone gearboxes etc are fetching..

Im assuming you would be doing the work..

Would go good with a J20 though!

Interestingly the latest revision of the GV has a 2.4 litre derivative of the J20, funnily enough called the J24. 92mm bore and 90mm stroke I believe.

mmm leaning more and more towards a J20 now.. Yeah I'd be doing all the work myself (given I can get a conversion kit.. I'm not too good with a welder.. good with spanners though).

Hmm I'll price them all up and see how I go from there

Yes i have heard the j24, also in cars..So j18 j20 j24..

Alot of research needs to be one though, like any conversion being attempted by one self.

I researched for like 3 months before i bit the bullet!

J20 I can get a conversion kit for from the states, can even get a wiring loom too ($400USD though!!! i'll make my own thankyou very much).

Hi all

Trying to find what I will need to do to fit the dizzy engine into the vitara that has a g16b ( cracked head ) I'm told it's from a baleno any way.??
