I want to put an extra spare wheel on the roof of my Jimy. My current wheels are 215/75/15 Hankook MT's and with the steel Dynamic rims the wheels weigh 27kg each. I don't want to put that much extra weight on the roof so I asked Hankook what the tyre alone weighs and they say 16 kg. Thaty means my rims must be 11 kg. Seems like a lot?

I could just take the tyre alone but I was thinking of fitting one to the standard Jimny rim. Does anyone know what the weight of the standard Jimny rim is? I know they are much lighter than the rims I am using but exactly how much is what I need to know.

better off on a rear bar ya reckon?
no weight up high and easy to get to when ya need it.

Thanks Zooky08. Only 2kg less than the Dynamic rims which is not what I was looking for.

Have considered a rear bar but I don't think there is room for 2 spares side by side. Might have to consider a tyre only with some tyre levers and maybe a bead breaker although you can always drive over the tyre to break the bead I guess. Just a lot more work on the side of the road.

Maybe an alloy rim might be the next one to check out. I will check the weights thread to see if that one is listed. Did not know there was a weights thread!

Every kg counts I am afraid.

Please add what weights you know! More the better, For postage and for on the cars while we travel.

Stock 205 and rim is 20kg.

Alloys will be similar. The thickness of the alloy will probably weigh the same as a 5mm thick rim.

Added what I had to the other thread. My sclaes must be out since I weighed my stock tyres and rims as 18 kg.

have u check if theres any info on how much weight can u take safely on the roof racks u have?

I personally dnt think having 27kgs on the roof is too much.... if you only have the spare tyre and thats it

I have stand on my roof with no dramas and Im 77kg.... of course is a stationary weight, but it hold it good, so dnt think having 27 while moving should be any dramas.

I have seen ppl packing stuff and camping gear, hilift, roof tents, petrol or watter bins ect ect.... (different combination of course) but having a roof basket with camping gear would be more than 27kg IMO, so dnt think jsut one spare tyre would be an issue

I know the "keep it low", but if u dnt have other option just drive more carefully..... and if you taking a 2nd spare I guess it would be for some long range touring... so most of those places wont have big rock steps or crazy angles tracks that would make u tip over easily by having a bit of extra weight on the roof (I dnt sure bout this Im just guessing :helloo: ),

put jsut the spare on the roof with no dramas and have bit more careful driving on tight corners and ull be fine, just secure the tyre properly so it wont bounce or move.... and take it with the rim, the saving of the extra weight of the rim wont be worth it when Ull need to change tyres between rims on the side of the road :wink: , could be the difference of a 20 min job against a few hours of taking tyre out the bed, out of rim, inot the new one, try to get it back into bed with any technique u use, and inflate it, ect ect... and who knows in wht time/place/situation ull have to be working

27kg is fine imo. you'll barely notice. I have about 60kg up there regularly in my roof box. Put an alloy up there to save a couple of kilos, I assume they weigh less, but not certain.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I like the helium idea!

My concern is more about fatigue cracking of the rook, the connecting studs etc with the vibrations from the corrugations. You are correct this is for long range touring so I am not too concerned about the centre of gravity in this case. I am taking delivery of a windcheater roof rack from South Africa in a few days (I hope) and this will easily cope with the weight. I am just concerned about the fatigue issue and also the GVM. I was over the GVM on the last trip and another 27kg is not what I need. Have to rethink how to keep the total weight down (no need to send diet suggestions!)
