Edit: And to add some tech, there's some good discussion on the virtues of clutch fans here.
I've just put one in my Sierra... perfect fit.

So far going well.
No erratic temps.
Gauge between 75 and 85 in all conditions.
Not had really hot weather test yet.
I suspect it will need a warmer thermostat in Winter now.

If it fails, a new one will happen.
Especially now I am certain it was the problem.

But for now it saved around $120.

Which will pay for the t-case and auto oil changes,
and a temp guage for the auto :)

hey Christover, do you think you had lost some oil? because you didnt empty it just added to it. did you at all think about draining the oil?

is that seal possible to be replaced? and how much did the oil cost you from suzuki?

Got the oil from ebay, it is a toyota oil. $19.20 delivered. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI ... 0684272355
I didn't drain the oil that was still in there.
There wasn't much left.
Ithink it breaks down with time, was no signs of leaking.
But it was up to 20 years old.
I took a gamble and just added the new oil.
The seal comes out easily enuff, is just a big rubber ring.
Didn't try to find a new one,
any spending got to close to buying a new one.
I thought about using a gasket sealer,
but I didn't because it may throw balance off.

Would have bought a new fan hub,
if I was absolutely sure it was the issue.
Now I know, will buy a new one if the patch up don't last well.

FYI, I thought id check Toyota before buying off ebay, its just under half price to buy from Toyota.
I got two for $19.10.

WORKS ON JIMNY

just did it on mine M13A (nonvvt) looks almost like an identical part. probably be able to swap if you ever needed to...

Also, i changed the countersunk phillips screws with some allen-socket countersunks... much better (i rounded off one of the phillips)

New fan clutches on special at the moment.
On Amazon. Just ordered one. Mines still working, but a new one for Desert trips sounds wise.

anyone know if there is a spec (RPM) for testing these? the hotter the air the more they grab and spin at engine speed, but there must be a spec to show at what temp to what RPM of the fan

I'm half way through this job. Have the fan apart and picked x2 bottles of fluid from Toyota today and plan to finish the job when I get home from work.

However when the fan was out and apart, I decided it would be a great idea to give it a good clean and get rid of all the old fluid cos in my mind it clearly wasn't doing its job.

But when I was picking up the fluid from Toyota, the guys says, "make sure you don't loose any of the old fluid when its apart, just add 1 bottle of the new stuff to the old and it'll be fine". Then I said, "too late, its all gone...". then he said, "well you fan is stuffed mate, it won't work".

Is this true??? I was planning to fill it up with the new fluid (thinkign it was about x2 bottles)... Well guess I'll find out soon enough...

Not heard that before.
But could be true.
Hope its wrong for your sake.

Well good news (for me anyway) got it all back together and the fan seems to be doing its job :)

Drove it up and down the freeway at 110kmh and the temps are stable and cool. Seems to drag on the engine a bit more though so I can hear the fan a bit now when driving at normal temps and have made the engine bit less responsive unfortunately, but at least it should stay cool when the motor is loaded up for long periods!

Also I found a impact driver helped get the 'soft' screws out without damage.

Notes/tips when doing this on a Jimny (and not planning to remove anything but the fan):
1. Removing radiator tops bolts are a must
2. Undo the fan shroud, and rotate it anticlockwise approx 45 degrees to allow far easier access to the fan-to-waterpump bolts from the left of the fan/radiator - will need to unbolt the power steering reservoir from the right of the radiator support (x2 bolts), and will need to get forceful with the shroud to flex it past the lower righthand side radiator support that runs back towards the engine (but it doable).
3. Once fan is undone, lift it and the fan shroud up as high as possible with the radiator pulled as forward as possible (not top bolts must be undone) and then the fan can be slid up between the radiator and fan shroud (very tight but a bit of juggling gets it out)
4. If you've emptied and clean all the old fluid out like I did, then I found that 1.5 bottle of Toyota's fluid/silicone filled the Jimny fan hub to the top.
5. Be careful not damage any of the fins on the radiator core (very delicate)

Using my OBD2 reader and checking the coolant temps live, it now sits between 87-91 degrees in normal city driving, when at constant high speed (110kmh which requires high engine load to maintain speed due to small engine size) the temps sit between 89-94 degrees.

Fitted the new fan clutch.
Engine seems much smoother, and a bit more powerful now.
Maybe the old fan clutch had worn bearings, or was on too early?
Or its just my imagination.

Can't comment on cooling ability,
as I had to fit a new radiator at same time.

Although engine never overheated before,
it now runs 10*C cooler.

Just replaced my oil......

Fully flushed it out and used 2 tubes of oil. Fan seems to be working more so than it did before. Even with the air-con on and a 40' day it didnt get over half in temp. My jimny has 288888 on the clock and I have a new clutch and thermo on the way from Repco.

SHould keep it healthy till next year and then its engine upgrade time.

even tho i bought i new fan hub, i dont think its working all that great. so i re-filled my old one. i used almost a full tube and it seems quite firm now, maybe put to much in.
Have you guys been filling it up, just so the metal strip is covered or to the outer edge where the hole is?? (seen in the photo at 5 0'clock position)

also, i had the fan hub sitting in my car over night with the coil facing down, in the morning i had a look at it and found a 5c piece size thing of the oil on the floor. so maybe its over full, or maybe it doesnt like sititng face down for long periods. I stood it up (for 8 hrs) in the running position and it didnt leak, so hope it all good.

I found that x2 tubes filled mine after completely emptying/cleaning the old stuff out (not sure if it's the same size as yours, but can't be that much diff..) and hasn't leaked... Maybe as you say they just don't like sitting face down.

I just guesstimated.
Stuck full tube in on top of any existing oil.
Mine was a bit stiff at first but loosened up.
My new fan hub works great so far.

Leaking don't sound good.
But use may expand seal and stop leak?

ok thanks for the reply guys, only reason why im doing this because the other i was idling with the A/C on and then it started to cut in and cut out, then i saw the gauge it was 3/4. temp was low 90c's. i dont think the fan hub was full locked on at that stage tho, which it should be.

even suzistore recons my new one was crap (bought from them), they said that before they remembered it was only new. ill fit the new one and see how i go-if it leaks out then i fill up the "new" one and put that in ahah.
