hey all, going camping next week and want to rig up a temporary dual battery system in my current car so i can run a fridge for 4 days. the reason i want to go temporary is cos im selling the car and dont want to fork out big dollars for a good one.
ideas?

buy an engel or waeco deep cycle battery from BCF. they charge from 240v and will last over a week running a fridge straight depending which one you buy. what type of fridge do you have?

your dreaming if you think any battery system you can carry without a forklift will run a battery for over a week
Jonamaphone, how much driving will you be doing? easy way is strap the battery down somewhere and run soem fat cable to it via a basic isolator, not a lot fo work and easy to pull out later
unless you can get hold of about 120w worth of solar panel

thanks royce.
probably not alot of driving (21st party). does the alternater still charge the battery when the car (hilux) is idling? was thinking maybe of just idling the car for halfan hour acouple of times aday instead of going for a drive to charge it. whadaya rekon?
no access to solar unfortunately.

nah not really you need some amount of revs to get teh amps up
I reckon 1 hour a day at full charge would probably be enough to see you through, take a multimeter with you and keep an eye on the battery, 12.8 is full, 12.0 is trouble

7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day = 168 hours runtime
you have 52 amphours (not really) over that 168 hours
52/168 = 0.30952, NO fridge in the world is that efficient unless you are in the snow or using it to thaw out ice
its like saying somebody has made a new 40l fuel tank for sierras that you can drive 2000km on

yeah i dont really understand it either but that is what he said he did but he must of charged it some how because even if the fridge was as efficient as it is suppsosed to be a 2.4amps then it would only give about 24 hrs so i dont know but they will still do better then a 700cca battery

I run a 50lt waeco with 100amp AGM battery and I get about 3 days in summer. (5 easy in winter) then I need to charge it. They say the 50 lt uses approx .87amps per hour but work on 30amps in 24 hours. Royce is rather cluded up on all this shit.

Zook_fan didn't say that it was working efficiently for a week. The fridge in my camper has ran for nearly 6 months on a flat battery. The beer in it is still warm though

i charge the battery on my camper trailer (when its connected to other peoples car) through a lighter plug that goes through the center of the car, out the boot and in to the anderson plug on the trailer..
so whenever the ignition is on and car is running, its charging the battery.. and when u dont want it in, un-plug the lighter plug.. just remember the end of the plug might be live unless u disconnect it from the battery aswell.
you could do the same with a battery just strapped down inside the car somewhere, just connect it to the lighter 2 make it charge..

it is highly possible that he is talking shit but if a 50lt waeco can run on 0.87 amps then an engel should run at about 0.6 as it is supposed to run at around 25% less then the waeco's... which would mean it would run for 33.6 hours but i dont know how efficently it was running either so i think that it is a great product but yeah there are better options but the fact that it doesnt need to be fitted to any particular car i thought it would be something good to suggest for this application... but in his first thread he didnt mention he already had a spare battery, in that case i would buy a cheap wiring kit and just put that in. they only cost around $80-100 for the cheapy's and you could remove it and put it into your next vehicle when done

waecos in mid 20's will burn about 30ah/hrs per 24 hours, dont believe the hype engels chew more fat than waecos
if you get into hotter temps or start putting hot stuff in the usage skyrockets
they are good but you have to do your own research on how good they will work

ok ok, so im thinking some of those battery terminal clamps going from aux to main while im driving/charging, then while when the car is turned off i just undo the positive that goes from the aux battery to the starting battery so that the fridge only drains from the aux. should be 20 bucks worth of cable and some terminals.... whadayareckon?

better to use the isolator ones with the big green knob you undo, otherwise you have a live lead flopping around but yep that will do

He was the hot glue gun king at Brisbane car sound for years. If you needed a graphic equaliser he would have it hooked up and wired in 2.5 minutes
