This is an easy cheap modification you can do if you have issues with getting foriegn objects inbetween the tyre and rim while 4wding which can cause the tyres to deflate or break the bead. This usually happens when your tyres are set at low pressures. Although the Sikaflex helps the tyres stay on the rims, the main idea of this is to create an O ring which helps prevent foriegn objects such as mud, dirt and rocks being wedged in between the tyre and rim preventing the tyre from seating itself again after flexing from the rim.

Greg/1madengineer has been running his tyres like this in all the major rockcrawling competitions for years now and swears by it. I have not tested this but will be doing some wheeling over the next few weeks and will be back with an update on how it went.

Not sure if i used the right stuff but it was sitting there, so i used it. I have only done the two front tyres at this stage. I thought i'd see how they went over xmas. I guess there's a chance that he tyre may come off, then get all the dirt pressed in to the sikaflex and then it'll become a big mess. And i couldn't get one of the rear wheels off

Here's my new tyre pliers, very cool. Another concern i have is that the bead came away from the rim very easily and when reinflated, it went back on very easily, no bangs or anything, so it's like the tyres aren't tight enough on the rims, which will cause them to come off easily on the track.

Feel free to bag me out or say how it's a bad idea.

Good idea Steve.

How hard is the rubber? Just wondering if the rubber has gone hard which is making it easier to unseat and reseat the bead

you may have a point. Simex ETs seem to be a pretty hard tyre. My last ones were really hard. This i why you have to let them right down to get any bag action.

You could also try the mastik (black), also made by sikaflex...

We used to use both products in hostile environments to hold conduits to walls etc. The mounting screws were just to hold the thing until the sikaflex set, then they would rust out.

sounds to simple to be true....... my only question would be does it have any long term affects on the rubber compound?

let me know how you go............ might have to give it a go if it works

I personally would run a bead around the... bead rather than smearing it with my finger, however I am half cut and also an asshat and smearing it may be the best way...

I tried it, its shit and doesnt seal fuckall and tyre dudes will tell you to piss off if you try and get tyres fitted on the rims cause they wont seal anymore :)

break a bead with you pliers at race pressure and no sealant and then glued with no pressure and see the difference

and most urethane sikaflex isnt designed to stick to rubber

butyl mastic and kwik grip will stick to both

you can also get special screws to screw the tyre to the rim, they use em drag racing :)

but yes they will help make a better seal at low pressure

If the force you are applying is enough to pop a bead, even at low pressures, the sika wouldn't help much. It's strong stuff, hell it's what hold most buses together but not in this application.

PS Steve I can provide a half reasonable response every now and again, even on a Wednesday night before a holiday. (Mock Friday night)

I really don't think it will do much steve.

You are just putting something in their which will keep the side of the tyre away from the rim allowing for the entry of more dirt.

Since this is a weekender anyway may I suggect that you get the wheels relloed with bigger lips on them. Where the bead seats is the safety lip so if you find somewheere that has a "Jenny roller" then you could reroll the wheels so that they have a larger lip.

Also the internal beadlocks would probably be better but the cost heaps and that defeats the purpose of teh car doesn't it.

If you're not happy with it Steve I look forward to your DIY mechanical beadlocks thread 8)
