So my 1996 Vitara likes making funny noises. In 5th gear on the highway it makes a loud grinding noise. Not whining....more like a metalic grind.

It happens in 3rd slightly.

The thing is its only on accelaration. Take your foot off the pedal abd its gone. Another thing I noticed is if your braking in 3rd for a red light..when the car starts to shutter (to change down) it'll make the grinding in sync with the shutter...

Can anyone give advice?

Oil level is good. So is it a gearbox swap or is it cheaper to change the bearing

Drop the oil and check the plug, I presume it will have a magnetic drain plug, can someone confirm this? If it does then check to see what is attached, chunks are really bad small bits of metal are still bad but not as bad as chunks of teeth. If there is alot of gunk on it and new oil doesn't make it drive any better then maybe it's time to start looking for a new gearbox.

Yeah figured a new box would be easiest..

Atleast i'll have a new clutch....Because I can't work out why my clutch is sooooooooooo hard!!! (any thoughts on this....clutch has alot of pressure on the pedal? could the pressure plate be buggered)

anyone know how heavy a vit box is? is it possible to sit it on your belly and align it? or should I rent a transmission jack?

If you are really concerned just pump it full of grease hehe, really you shouldn't do this. Also you don't need a tranny jack just get a mate to help. Also I know sweet fark all about vitara's but it should have a vacuum assisted clutch, I would be thinking you have a problem with this area and this is why your clutch is hard.

If only! Still cable

The Vit box is bigger and heavier than a Sierra, not much room for two under there either.

There are additives for gearboxes, probably not much use now tho if it's making bad noises.

Am I gonna need to build some muscle?

I've had cars with cable clutches and felt sierra clutches and none have been hard in the slightest.

Mine hurts my legs...new clutch cable aswell

That was my thought. I don't like it  know way of telling for sure untill I pull it out, I am guessing.

Has anyone ever modified a GV hydraulic clutch setup to a vit?
