My gearbox is pissing out oil

I thought I might be something to do with moving my engine and gearob down 50mm, but I had a look and I don't think the distance between the transmission and transfer case has changed by much, if any.

I might just change the seal on the back of the transmission and see how that goes. In the meantime, you should see how much gear oil is under the car :gross: pisses me off coz I pressure washed it when I had the engine out.

would the level of the shaft from the gearbox to the transfer be creating a different wear on seals inside the gearbox if you moved the gearbox down 50mm... ? Not saying it's wrong, just saying the seals in the rear of the gearbox would be worn in to suit the old angles and horizontal pressures and now you've changed it?

but hey, i aint no mechanic

check what type of breather you have to. some early boxes had a small hole in the small shift boot that they would vent through.

if you've got oil everywhere, i'd say its your rear seal.
Have you been driving it much? it may have been 'flicked' everywhere by the output shaft/flange... which is why theres so much under the car?

Re the breather thing, i thought they only leaked oil when driving steep angles (climbs etc)?

This is an old box that I put in when I swapped in the 1.6 and NOW I remember that it was leaking a bit of oil  not to mention the bearings are rooted, it whines louder than Germain Greer...

Steve I think what you said has some validity, but the seal in the back of this box is so cactus i don't think it would make much difference either way.

I might try to get the underside steam cleaned once I get the transmission sorted, it's nasty under there!

You might be right Joe, but I am a little sick of working on it. I just want to get out and put some dents in it!
