Im of the exact opposite, more tread depth the better, Comes from riding trail bikes lots, dirty great big chunky tyres are serious very soft sand tyres.

I pull lots of cars out of bogs that have all terains n such, no grip, straight down.

I will never go to a lighter tread for sand, I am thinking of a set of sand tyres from the states, 3" deep tread.

i have driven on alot of tires.

and i stand by the statement.

simex Ets we only slightly better in deep slop. as were silverstones. but were far far worse on anything else.

they are by far the best tyre i have driven on on wet and dry rocks, wet and dry gravel. and pretty much any thing else i have driven. including sand.

That being said I wouldnt pay aussie prices for them. But then i wouldnt pay Aussie prices for anything that i can ship over my self. thats just the way i do it.

Hhehehehe i knew you would be happy with them! :D

ive ran claws and xterrains, the exterrains are slightly better in the sand, but for the added price, there not as good in any other terrain, tho running claws on a large car for sand is a stupid idea, as there designed to dig, imo,

I have a 99 jimny, first thing was a uhf, then came an engine conversion, g16b made a big improvement, then came an 80mm lift, which actually dobled my wheel travel,
body lift, 31s dual batteries rear locker, ect.

23degree, correct, on a zook there in credible in the sand, not alot of wait so it doesnt sink,
on a heavy car unless its got heaps of power they do, mickey thompson say it them selves, claws are deigned to dig for hard ground,

Only used them on me zook, wish I had have known of them when I had my F150 with the big block.

I had BFG all terrains on her, useless on sand, floor it, and all 4 wheels just span and went nowhere, got some Cooper SSts, lots better.

The less tread the better in sand I find... Any sort of chunky tread tends to dig holes...

Ben, let me ask you this.
Lay your hand flat on the sand, then drag it, now, dig you fingers down to the second knuckle and now try to drag it.

Which one is easier, and which one wants to pull you in the direction your trying to drag your hand.

Why do all do all sand rigs, competition, have huge great paddles. Google "sand tires"

I can drop my clutch in soft sand, cuppla thousand revs, and take off, fast, in 2wd, in quite soft sand, and show off like all get out alongside a 4wd with smooth tyres, that have to be very gentle taking off in 4wd.

Look up Ponde sand drags.

All I know is that when I had half worn, very mild tread ATs, I floated up dunes.

Now I have Bighorn's I dig in and get stuck halfway up dunes...

Its just my experience...

Have you stopped letting your tires down or something?
Completly different vehicle but cooper atrs on my gu patrol work well when deflated but in comparison to a set of micky t mtrs on a mates patrol they dont even compare. we are talking full road pressure in 2wd on the mickys compared to 4wd and possibly a bit of pressure drop on the coopers

Always drop to 10psi before I head offroad. On the ATs it glided at 10psi, on the Bighorns it digs...

5psi on the claws when off road.

I find the little light sierras do no start to bulge their tyres till about 6psi.

When I finally do me build, an get 33s on my 15 x 8s, I have beadlocks, so I can go lower, full floating stuff.

The difference in bulge between 6psi and 4psi is amazing, im just a bit sus about going down to 4psi and doing the sideways dance, 5psi will suffice.

I have been sideways at 60k or so, working her real hard in 3rd high range, and gone up on two wheels, many a time, so maybe 4psi is fine, but, im just a bit chicken shit as I have torn tyres off wheels before, and that is not as much fun as you would think.

when you're talking about "bulge" though, thats not a great thing... you need to measure how much longer the tread area got on the road, as thats the primary function of airing down.

i've tested my kumho's at 5psi and 9psi and the sidewall bulge of 5psi puts me off as theyre going to be far easier to stake as well as more prone to roll off the rim.

I've not measure the increase in size however, but i did do this with my simexs, and the width increase was minimal while the length increase was quite large as i aired down.

Suziblu, you are an army of one on this issue. You are the only person that thinks aggressive tyres work in sand, and the only person that thinks claws are any good at anyhting.

You run fairly narrow, short, and not very aggressive tyres in sand and shout from the rooftops that wide and agressive tyres are the only thing to run in sand. You have neither.

You're basing your holy grail of sand performance on these:

Image

Which is like saying the best road tyres are these:

Image

They're great at what they are designed for, but they're no good for a Sierra.

Go ahead and get some paddles and you'll find out EXACTLY why short, wide and super aggressive tyres (like paddles) don't work on relatively heavy, underpowered cars. I've heard it said time and time again - in a 4WD, 400hp is where it starts for running paddles. Not 100hp, or 70hp.

I'm going to ask this again.

How many OTHER SUZUKIS have you played in the dunes with? You need to spend lots of time comparing what you have with other suzuki setups before you continue recommending the wrong tyres for sand.

Personally, I don't think you have much idea what works in sand, only that what you have works better than everyone else you see. That's fine, but it's important. It's not hard for a suzuki to work better than everything else you see. That doesn't mean your setup is the bees knees.

God no Royce, I see lots of stuff. Lots of it works better than my junk. I get owned all the time in my car.

I don't think that's the case with Suzkiblu, I don't think he's ever seen anything outperform his NT on 31's.

ill agree with u suziblu, hence y im going back to claws after my procomps are sold, couldn fault them beside it used a bit more fuel,

sand also depends on tire size, a 40 inch tire at full pressure is better then a 35 on half pressure because of the foot print, in most cases a directional tire will dig through sand,
Hence y the Mickey thompson Mtzs are the best selling tire, good all round, and work well in sand for a mud terrain tire,

Thats just my 2cents worht any way

Steve, like you have the only way of doing things, as you continually state, I also have my ways.

In sand, yes, I believe that very agresive tires are the go, the only vehicles that come close to me, are, suzis, but, as they do not have the extreme tread pattern that I have, they do not come close, and they admit, they have no chance till the get tyres like mine.

You come here, and state categorically that yours is the only way to do any thing, ie, NO way can a suspension lift allow larger tyres, rarara fukin rara

I have been driving off raod cars as a living since being in the simson desert, stuarts stony desert, grey ranges, kimberlies, and many in between.

Sand, soft shit, yes, I do believe that I have a pretty good grasp.

How on earth do you equate paddles to sliks, er, DEEERRRRR.

I am obviously not nearly as experienced as you in sand, so, can you please help me.

Do I take my 30 years of sand experience and punch it up my arse because you have driven Victorian stuff, and that makes you an expert on every thing 4wd, from rock, to sand, mud, whatever.

Steve, think about it, you have pretty good knowledge at what you know personally well, but, means fuk all when it comes to that which you know diddly squat about.

I do not run skinny tyres, as you state, nor do I go out against many other cars, only suzis, as they are the only cars that have any chance of running where I go.

Yes, i am arrogant in my ability, far less than you, as I take in others opinion, where as you, its your way, or your a dikhead.

I have no chance of taking on places like where the crew run in Glass House, no way, my car is not set up for the, conditions, nor is my driving ability able to take on this.

To tell me that I have no idea what I am on about, means you really have no idea, you are nothing but a pompus arse who only has a very limited knowledge, and for some reason, thinks that makes you gods gift to 4ders. Sadly, you do not see that you are a laughing stock of many.

Get back to us when you have actually run wide or aggressive tyres.

I have NEVER argued that your tyres work well, only that other tyres might work better. (Or that the tyres you have now WILL work better when run backwards)

Only that your insistence that you run wide and aggressive tyres. You don't.

You run small mud pattern tyres.

You have never, once, before mentioned that you outperform anyone else running 31's on a sierra, only that you outperform big cars.

No, mine is far from the only way from doing anything, and I love to be proven wrong, but it has to be proof, but your position is nonsense and it's proven by that the fact your own setup is closer to my idea of what works in sand than yours - a tyre of moderate width and moderate tread pattern. You're claiming a wide and agressive tyre owns the sand - run some wide and aggressive tyres and prove it.

My claim is that a narrower, but taller tyre with a less aggressive tried pattern will work better, you've never tried one to know, but that doesn't matter, because you can't be told anything about sand.

That's great, just don't expect anyone else to believe you.

Steve.

For the OP. The first mod for my Jimny was tyres. For the stuff I do I went for 205/70x15 Cooper ATR's, not big, but they work well on rocks, gravel and hills.

I bought tow bar, tyre repair kit & ARB compressor with a $1000 Suzuki ARB gift voucher.

After that was a nudge bar just mount the spotties and aerial. I already had a UHF set.

Then it was a Thumper 75AH battery in the back. I go camping with my father who needs breathing machine at night.

Then I got an ARB 35l fridge.

I made up a floor for the rear that sits on top of the seats, compressor and battery. It is easy to take out and is carpeted to stop the dogs sliding around.

I have just ordered Genie Wildcat extractors & will be getting them ceramic coated. The rest of the exhaust I leave alone until I see how it goes, I don't want noise.

I have put some black sunshade across the windscreen for the gap between the visors and fitted a fire extinguisher.

I have a lightweight camping trailer with brakes so that's all legal. I go everywhere with 2x10l & 1x20l jerry cans and heaps of water, PLB and a good toolkit. 90 watt inverter for laptop, camera and assorted batteries.

Thats about it.

As I have said before. I love my Jimny :)

Damn best i get rid of those Silverstone Extremes, they were so crap in the Tassie sand i couldn't get bogged :!:
Image

Yes this sand is wet but it was the only footage i could find from out side my car, and yes we did drive lots of soft dry sand dunes and no i still did not get stuck. The other times we have been there i have run Silverstone mt117 sports and Super Swamper sx's and i'm yet to get stuck in sand. So maybe Steve this time you are not exactly wright.

Tried less aggressive tyres on sand though Kenn?

There's a big difference between being happy with the performance of a tyre in an environment and it being the tyre you'd recommend to someone who wasn't really going to do anything else.

I'm perfectly happy with the performance of Swampers on road, but I'd never recommend them to someone as a road tyre.
