That's a pretty good link and sums it all up pretty well. But he's not admitting the amount of times he fucked up to finally get it looking that good, and he's glossing over a lot of things that can and will go wrong.

Here's my roller effort, about halfway down the first page.

A rolled surface looks and feels like orange peel in texture even when thinned, you need the patience of a jedi if you plan to sand it back smooth like that link suggests, and a roller job will never cure as hard as a spray job (or spray can) as it goes on too thick even if you thin it down. And the Sierra has a lot of hard nooks and crannies that'll give you the total shits to try get it looking right.

It won't cost $50 either - I went through at least 10 foam rollers, they deteriorate fast and you have a window of about 1 - 2 minutes before the paint gets too tacky to work (and starts shredding your roller foam into the paint), so you gotta work real fast and plan your rolling - the rolled texture looks completely different at various stages of paint tackiness (?... is that the word?). If you plan to sand it back as in the link you'll spend at least $50 in sandpaper too, and I guarantee it'll take at least 24 hours of labour to get the finish that nice.


But, don't let that scare you - it can be done. I just got another 4 litres of paint and I plan to roll out a coat of green on my replacement bonnet this weekend... but i'm OK with the orange peel look :lol:

i was talking to my mate who is a spray painter and he was telling me that the best way to get a good paint job, especialy if your using a roller is. good preperation. and realy thin coats.

che just. was there any reason why u didnt opt to use a compressor and spray kit.

He's right - a solid prep makes all the difference. I spend a month with sandpaper in one hand and filler in the other before I finally got to top coating.

Was working two jobs at the time and keeping odd hours - I had an afternoon a week to try and sort out the job, otherwise I had an hour or two after midnight when I got home. Roller is quiet, it's way cheaper than buying/renting a compressor, and you don't need to prep/mask off for overspray, and I could do it inside at 2am one section at a time and keep the neighbours/roommates happy.

I had a compressor lined up and in the garage, it was my old room mates... I went to have a go on a test panel before tackling the car but it was fucked - dickhead never told me in the 100 times I asked him that it was seized.

I read the paint pdf and said it could be applied by roller, was sick of looking at the ghetto car that it was so bit the bullet and rolled it green over the course of a few weeks.

maybe the fact that is the hackiest shit Ive ever seen in regards to painting a car.

you could do it right with auto paint and a spray gun for about $150 in paint,
but it sounds like you may know better

yeah really its great to say you can do it for cheap but it takes so fucking long its stupid

I started doing mine in December and got to the 2nd last coat and decided its stupid, too much sanding and stuffing around

ok I had some of it already, but even if I didnt it would still be less than $200.
and took 2 days total
inc dents etc
ps a mini should be cheaper :P if you do it right :D

did mine in 3 days which included striping the car, painting and re assemble.
2 coats of etch prime, 2 of primer and 4 of colour. cost around $200 at
katherine prices but including a chuck away spray gun

why people stuff around with crap has me stuffed.

Hey "ajar", looks great.
Question , when you are doing 2pac doesn't ventilation become more important than with Auto Enamel or Acrylic. 2pac is quite hazardous isn't it?

I was considering doing the FREE painting course with VG paints in Girraween NSW.

When it warms up I was planning on doing Acrylic in the garage, with a spray gun , mask & eyewear as PPE, with no ventilation other than an open garage door.

Personally I would not recommend the "handy man in us" to use 2pac.
