Sounds exactly like mine.. You get used to the noise after awhile, make sure your backlash is set up pretty tight aswell.

if it's set up properly it shouldn't make any noise...maybe the occasional click here and there...

Took a lockrite out and fitted a spartan in the rear of the wide track is heaps better than the lockrite. As for bangs i would say a 90% improvemwnt as for the shimming didnt need anymore than the original as anymore would not let the cross pin through.
Something doesn't sound right if it bangs alot mine is heaps better. IMO

Mine had no shims, banged verry rarely.

Did you swap the sides of the side gears?
The more worn face of the gear shoud face backward to make it easier to unlock when not under power and harder to unlock under power, if you don't swap them, the more worn face facing forward makes it easier to unlock under power and that's when I'd bangs.
As you have a narrow track (like i did) your side gears are probably more worn than others, if you did swap sides with them you might want to try some new ones.

Thanks All
I expected some noises but these bangs sound scary,I lifted vehicle on stands and by spinning the wheels can make the locks disengage but it feel thou something is jamming rotation after 1/2 dozen clicks.

My spartan didn't come with shims.
Instructions are explicit that you remove the washer things
that the gears run on,
or there wont be clearance for disengaging locker.

They can appear to be not there, so make sure they aren't.

I think the lock rite is not the same.

I removed all spaces as per fitting instructions, all components refitted exactly as removal.
Diffs used are not original from vehicle,so wondering if side gear [retainer] adjustments might need checking.

On one assembly I had problems with the spartan not disengaging properly, which turned out to be a sticky locker pin, not allowing the side gears to slide in far enough.
A bit of emery and a clean of the pins, problem solved

So should the pins move without a lot of friction then?

Yes pins need to slide freely, so the locker can easily be pushed in by the side gears. That's the pins in the locker, not diff pins.
When pushed together, side gear teeth can slide over locker teeth easily.

Ahh, I thought you meant the centre pins.
Cool I'll make sure they slide well then.

I hope it all works out.
I'm told some people have troubles with the diff pin support cross.
but unsure what that issue is, never seen it myself.

What sort of speeds are you doing when it bangs? I found that at normal driving speeds you don't even notice the locker in there, but when you are driving at car park speeds it bangs and clunks a fair bit. I have also noticed that after running it for about 6 months it is heaps quieter, even at car park speeds. Good diff oil will help too.

Slow speeds [60km max] as I don't want to put much stress on diff until I am sure diff setup right.

Never done a spartan but a few lockrights I've done have needed the box piece that holds the cross shafts filed down so the cross shafts can slip in easily. Clearances are the key. I put an axle in a vice, locker carrier on the axle and another axle in the carrier. If you turn the carrier in one direction against the axle in the vice you should be able to rotate the other axle in the same direction by hand. Oh and mine are quiet.(lockrights though)

My front spartan is very quiet most of the time, but I get an occassional wind up and bang release, though this is happening less and less with use.

I have rather poor hearing, but I do feel noises, and hear some.

Hello Gentlemen. My first post. I've had the Suzi in the avatar for about 8 years. Stock standard except for 15" F100 rims, and old tyres off my 91 Pajero. Mainly the Suzi just runs around the beach and occasionally launches the boat, so it gets wet and is rusting but its still solid and reliable.

Anyway I've just received my Spartan locker. ($200, posted from a friend in the US). Unfortunately I can't get around to fitting it for about a month but I'm interested to hear your experience of using lockers in sand.
Also I'm wondering how this is going to work with the significant added weight of the boat pressing down on the towbar and the trailer wheels stuck in the sand? Is there a chance the locker could could totally slip like a slipping clutch or is it going to give me a big towing improvement? Its something I am having trouble getting my head around. (I tow the boat on a very short straight stretch of pavement but the rest is all sand.).

Any comments will be read with interest.

Cheers.

I have no sand experience.
But on any low traction surface it will stay locked.
It needs the pressure of one wheel trying to go faster, to unlock it.

How about this hypothetical situation....

Car is on a firm, paved, incline surface (say a boat ramp) with lots of weight pressing down on the back wheels and a loaded boat trailer behind. What happens when the engine is gunned? Do both wheels spin until I gain traction? Does the locker unlock both wheels and I go nowhere? Does one wheel unlock? Or do I burn out the clutch? :)

Both wheels stay locked together.

Will only unlock for a sharp turn on hard surface,
then instantly lock again.
