Hi all
Probably been done before but meh... (flame suit on)
What's the best oil to run in my GV (V6).
Any suggestions?
What brand? Weight? etc
What do other people use? I've heard good things about Penrite...
It's done about 165,000k's

Pete

I am pretty sure you do some harm to your engine if you DONT use a 10W/30 oil, the lifters or timing chain tensioner play up

Motul do an oil in that weight, along with Castrol I think, but I like Motul

5W/30 by far the best.

 Why do you think I asked here?...

10W/30is the go? Sound a freckle light to me. 20/40?
It does sound a bit 'tappetty' when warm I think.
(note: I could be wrong)

I have tried 10/30 and others and I can tell you from 4 years of driving a GV that 5/30 is way better than 10/30 by a country mile. Everything runs smooth and quiter from cold start to fully warmed up. Has to be good qualily Full synthetic oil like Castrol 5/30.

Your nuts Tim. Try 5/30 oil. I do however run Magnatic in my VRX Lancer from new. (9 years oils) and never had a prob but the mighty GV's like 5/30 oil JMO

Yeah - 5/30 all the way....

I ran Magnatec for a while (have been running in my Z since I got it and never had a problem) but noticed the dreaded tensioner rattle getting more noticable, so thought I'd try some 5/30 - and it made a big difference!

Yes I used to run 10/30 and started to get the tensioner rattle but then changed to 5/30 and no more noise.

made by nulon. add it to your old oil, run the car for 30 min and it cleans up alot of carbon deposits.

It's a cleaning agent you add to the oil and run for a bit before dropping it out. Makes a big difference to some motors.

I have found with most late model stuff the lighter the oil you use the quieter (and better) they run. Using thicker oils to shut them up does not work. I won't use anything thicker than 10w40 in anything post 1990.

As a side note the newer Hondas run a 0w30 oil, almost like water.

I just got off the blower to the local suzuki dealer and he said they run 10/30W. I asked about 5/30W and he said it wasn't necessary and that 10/30 would be fine. My owners manual also 10/30.
:?
Confused as I am, I'll go with the consensus of the gurus on here and get 5/30W.

I'll check out different brands of oil on they way home from work at supercrap. Leaning towards Magnatec I think.

Cheers for the advice people! 8)

10W30 semi synth is fine. I've run it in the past few oil changes but am now using 5W30 fully synth only because Supercrap were on special. It was the same price as 10W30 semi synth.

I can't tell any difference between the 5W30 and 10W30 and there's no timing chain rattle with either.

Bastard castrol only sells oil in 5l containers and I need 5.5 for oil and filter. :x
Would it be bad form to go to a local mechanic and see if they sell bulk oil?

Ok I'm a tightarse, but why spend more than I need?

No issues, oil filter is a bit of a bastard though (for someone with limited skills like me).
Runs a lot quieter too!

Thanks for the advice all!

no worries mate. I found the best way to get filter off was through the wheel arch area. :-)
