father i laws car is a 93 g16b vitara with a 4 speed auto
the box is making a high pitch bearings noise in park that goes away in drive. it will drive but is losing drive every now and again. oil has got a burnt smell and look to it after a week in the car. he just swapped a engine in it last weekend.
he is pulling the box out and replacing it but he wants me to have a look at it and see if we can rebuild it.
i thought it was the pump or psi relief vavule till i had a look at it just then. now i have no idea. maybe a bit of crap floating around and causing havic where every it gets jammed for a bit.
any ideas? i know its stuffed. i have rebuild a th400, trimatic and c10 but never a computer controled auto before

i would say it was something done when the motor was changed and not the fact the auto has just died. is the fluid level being checked with the auoto in drive? this will require two people.

yes with the car running in drive and the box was warm.
i have a feeling after talking to my inlaw that the son (3 year grease monkey) has put the wrong fluid in it and it has just killed it self. they used dextron 3.
found out last night he drive it 40 ks with it slipping out of gear but " it goes back into gear it you rev it to 4000 rpm"
the more i talk to them the more i think its not fixable.

thought i'd let people know what it was. it was the overdrive in the torque converter had shat it self in a big way and chunks were floating around and blocking off the oil to the pump so no oil pressure and no go.
he got the converter rebuilt, new filter and oil and its been in the car for a week no problems. i've never seen a o/d fall apart like that before
