I have recently aquired some Castrol multitrax manual transmission oil.
It is an API GL5, SAE80W-90 oil.
I have looked in the service manual and it says to use the same oil in
the diffs, gearbox and transfer (API GL5 80W-90).
However at the auto store (supercheap) in their book it says to use
different types of oils.
Is this just a marketing strategy or what?

just use the same oil in all. supashit will prolly have a thicker oil listed for the diffs. But unless you have lsd diffs the lighter stuff will be fine.

I've got a 4L bottle of hypoid gear oil in the garage, could I use it in the diff or is it just for LSD's?

It says on the back.
"Castrol Multitrax is particularly suitable for vehicals with combined manual transmission and hypoid differentials."
Im not sure what this means.

You can use it in diff's, but was designed for transaxel's ( front wheel drive g/box's)

It will be fine in all your running gear..

Special gear oils are required for hypoid gears because the sliding action requires effective lubrication under extreme pressure between the teeth.

i just use extra virgin olive oil.
the bonus is if you ever need some oil for you frying pan while on a camping trip and you've forgotten it, you can undo the diff bung a bit and let some out in your pan. 8)
