Mr Stek, (Since we're being formal)
I use it mainly on steep downhills, it will not run away at all.
It was great in Ormeo creek, Scenic rim creek, just put it in 1st and let it walk away. Don't have to smash over rocks anymore.
Steep uphills is usually 3rd. :P

I do however find that I drive in Hi range mostly as it is 20% lower than stock. (Won't get that on 31s)

Can be a pain though having to stop and put it back into Hi once the track opens up. I do about 30km/hr in Low 5th flatout. :?

Personally I like it. 8)

Its just a given when you get bigger tyres.

dont wanna sound like a dick and all, but wouldn't bigger tyres give you lower revs?

the tyres have a bigger circumference so the diffs, and therefore engine would only need to spin at a lower rpm to achieve the same speed?

wouldn't the reduction gearing in either the diffs or TC be responsible for increasing the revs??

Probably should have worded it better, im my case, it revs harder, as the dif gearing put my gearing lower then what it was standard... even with 31's. Hence, mine revs harder.

Mr DMAC, how often do you actuality use 1st low & for how long would you be in said gear??

Cause I'm in the market for gear's & can't make my mind's up.. :? :? 8O

Well you've seen first hand how mine goes with 4.9's, std 3.7's and 30's with the 1.6EFI. The 4.9's with the 3.9 diff gears would be pretty nice on the 31's both on and off road. Still if you can get the 5.14 tcase gears go for it!! :P

i don't know about up there but down here low range is the only option to get up the big dunes & the bottom-less beaches that eat pootrols.

my 5.14's in low range, 5th gear maxes out (as in, redline) at 50km/hr... i try not to use 5th low though, might as well be in 1st high.

i use low 2nd the most offroad followed by low 1st then low 3rd (on obstacles)... 2wd high for in between sections.

In the same gear, a 25% increase in speed will need a 25% increase in revs. Regardless of ratios...

JrZook's setup (gearing wise) is nearly identical to mine (he has fullsize 30's, I run small 31's). To be brutally honest, its a billion times more awesome with the 1.6 (especially makes 2nd low an incredibly versatile gear). The stock 1.3 was never as awesome, though was still very good.

I think we need to organise a wheeling day for "Mr Stek", so he can check out some different cars with different gearing :P

I run 32 muddies with 6.5 gears and 3.7 diff ratio. 4000 rpm in 5th gear I am doing 114 kph. EFI 1.6 motor as well, Vitara power steer and disc brakes in rear.

Low range 2nd and 3rd gears are fantastic. 1st gear mainly used for steep downhill and rock steps etc.

Looks like my car is very different, I have 31' tyres, 1.6 carby vit engine, standard WT diffs and vit manual gearbox (I guess that makes it slightly different). I used to have 6.5, on road they were strong, I used 5th from 65km up, no problems uphill. However gears were short and I didn't like it. Off road no much use of 1st gear, (very good only on very steep downhill sections). Uphill 2nd, mostly 3rd. Anyway gears broke, t-case cracked (didn't have rock toy ring than), I replaced them on warranty, sold and got 4.9. I don't know if that is because of vit gearbox but I don't use revs higher than 3500.
I like 4.9 on road, car is quiet, sits around 2500 at 100km in 5th, 2800 at 110km. bit too low, but no problems at all with keeping the speed on highway. I don't even use half of the throttle and its quiet. I don't feel that engine has to labour hard, maintais the speed with no dramas. Downfall is that on uphill sections 5th is shit and I need to down shift. I'm used to it, would love to have 1.6 EFI not a carby one. Off road 1st low is slow and low enough for rock crawling, very steep decline needs brakes, but that's what they for. I ve got new sport exhaust suited to lower revs range. I don't plan going for 33 that's why 4.9 are good, just wish to have more power.

I have read this thread and it has made me even more confused about what gearing to get.

But I'm pretty sure 4.9's would suit my needs pretty damn well with 31's on an NT drover (which I'm pretty sure has 3.9 diffs??), it's my daily driver so gets driven on the road more then anything and I dont ever see me going above 31's. Or Would the 6.5's suit my needs better?

I have never driven my car standard as I bought it with a dud motor but I figure it must be done since I have got the bigger wheels for it

few glitches in putting them in so not 100% sure, but the crawl ratio is about 119:1

according to my calculator, with 33s on it, if i can manage 7500 rpm i will be doing 10 km/h in first gear low

I was just calculating costs on lowrange and for a lockwrong and 6.5's delivery was $147, and lockwrong and 4.9's it was $115 for some reason. So over all cost was only something like $20 more expensive for the 4.9's even though they are $50 USD more expensive to buy.

I dont know how that works but yea

6.5s are an extra gear in the set i believe so they would be heavier and so cost more to ship

Yes, but as Shep says - email them and they will give you a real quote. Usually 50% cheaper.
