are vitara and sierra centres compatable? i have a vitara available for parts and wondered if i could swap centres?

front one will fit, but its alloy so you dont want to do it.

crown and pinions into sierra centres are a very common swap for lower gearing. but again only the front one is any use for this

depends on the model of vitara.
most are 5.1:1
ratios for a vitara i believe 4.3 4.6 4.8 5.1
sierra you can get 3.7 3.9 4.1
aftermarket you can get 5.3

5.1 usually
apparently you need to do some creative engineering to stop the pins that go into the spider gears from sliding out and breaking stuff. like hammer time or tack weld them in place.

how do you tell what ratio you have without counting the teeth?
as in year model etc???

this is from what i know so it may not be 100%
4.3s came in GV
4.6 came in vitara 1.6 carby 3 spd autos
4.8 came in 2.0 v6 vits
3.7 in the wide track 1.3
3.9 in the narrow track 1.3
4.1 came in the jimny i think but also the wide track maruti
5.1 came in all vits not covered above

no you need do nothing special.....as i have said before you get some thick industrial o-rings from a bearing joint and seat them between the ring gear and centre.....job done and they will never move (and it looks alot neater and is easily removed.)
note you don't need to do this if running air lockers.
