Hi all,
today my sierra was named the slowest car at my school and we named it the fume buggy
I didn't buy it because sierras were fast, i bought it because they r so insane off-road.
So now i have decided that some work is needed on the engine. it burns oil, blackens spark plugs, and my fuel economy sucks(250-300k's per tank). But there are so many suggestions and different combinations of fixes. What can anybody recommend to give me better fuel economy and good acceleration.
I don't want a super fast car, i just want the speed limits to be limits, not goals, lol

Yep about right at 250ish per tank. No hang on Casper gets over 600 per tank. Hang on, it's got a 75 lt tank.

using good oil
always warm it up 4 bout 10min
hmmmmm, hasnt had a tune in a while but runs otherwise smooth, how often should it be tuned
205/70/r15(i only have road tyres atm)
I fill her up (40L)
250ish eh? we used get 2 Sydney in my m8's lwb sierra and the tank still registered above empty, the only mod he had was a pod filter.
not that it (as far as i know) matters, the clutch is on the way out

sounds like its running pretty rich, I would make sure the choke isnt stuck on and the airfilter is clean
tune can be 20-40 000km depending really
do a compression test too to see how it is
does it ping much? if not that coulod be a good sign, 1.3's seem to ping like crazy at the lightest hint of burning oil

Choke plate could be the problem because the previous owner took it out during a rebuild and lost it so the one in there is home made, im still on the look out for a replacement but everybody only wants to sell the whole carburetter.
And what it a "ping"(forgive my ignorance)
As for the air filter, its all fine and pod filter will go in soon

run BP ultimate, it cures any pinging, gives more power and smoother response and i get about 350k to a tank (although my engine was rebuilt a year ago)
Mine ran crappy and had a bad flat spot but after running that its been good, it runs so crap on any other fuel

pinging is the noise u hear under hard acceleration that sounds like pinging lol.
what colour smoke is it?
you'll need to run the ultimate for a few tanks b4 its really effective but is worth it.
I wouldnt get a pod, i've just got a k&n filter in mine and is good.
Is it running standard exhaust?

its a blue/white smoke but it u put your hand near the exhaust it gets covered in specks of oil(unburned by the looks of it)
stock exhaust but soon to get a big muffler(mine is split thanks 2 a trip over rocky ground)
I haven't heard "pinging" but the stereo in never off nor is it ever low volume.
"stop smoke" worked for about 100ks then it made things worse, wont be trying that again

gday. I just put a ercon 1600 vit motor in mine because i was suffering from very similar probs that your are. I was getting very low ks and using a lot of oil. if i left mine idling when itwould idle there would be a huge black spt of muck on the ground. I have only had the 1600 in for 2 days as yet so i dont really now how the k per tank have change. I used to get 400 form a tank then it when sour down to 200 to 250 if i were lucky.
But i have done a few mods to my sierra which probably contributed to the decline. lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
once i have gone through 2 tanks i will write agian and say how much it has changed.

bcoz i saw on suzisport that they hav a 1.6 short motor thats very tempting...
And finally did you do it all or did you have it done

Did you find a solution to the smokey engine and excessive use of oil?
Mine seems to be doing the same.

Mine too was smokey and used oil. I put in a carby 1600. $500 for radiator, motor, p/s, aircon + transfer! I didnt use the adapter plate so pretty much $500 + oil.
Goes heaps better but fuel injection would be my choice if I had the $$

Hi Nik,
Where'd you get the 1600 engine and runing gear from?
How hard was it to put in without the adaptor plate?
What was the engine type. g16?
Cheers

Found it on another forum, not that hard without the adapter.
I drilled out top gearbox holes to take vit bolts then unscrew bottom studs on sierra gearbox and bolt it to the engine. Run a drill from the gearbox side through the engine bellhousing. It will come out on a curved section so get an old inner sleeve out of a leave spring or similar and cut to make a misalignment washer then using the old top gearbox bolts go through back into the gearbox done!
For the driver side engine mount I redrilled the holes at both sides for the rubber mount and elongated the chassis side mounting holes and it bolted up.
Hope that helps a bit.
Nik
