Hi guys, I thought I would post a pic after finishing my snorkel.

I fabbed it up out of 900mm 76mm OD steel pipe with a wall thickness of 1.6mm, and 2 90 degree mandrel bends.
It took me 2 afternoons to do the cuts and welds, and about 2 days to prep and paint it.
Opted for the safari snorkel head to increase the ram air effects.

I used about $4 of rubber edging from clark rubber to neaten up my hack jobs into the bonnet and front quarter panel.
Snorkel head cost $91
Steel cost about $90

I opted to fab my own as I wasn't happy with the amout of losses in the pipes and the price of the full snorkel units.

Theoretical calculations are indicating positive pressure to the air box of around 420 Pa (ram air effect of 490 Pa from the safari snorkel, and headlosses through the pipe of about 70 Pa) @ 100 km/h and 4000 rpm.
I have series 4 rockhopper in mine and its always rev happy with stock tyres on.

Initial trials have given a whole new dimension to 5th gear, however until i get around to doing some testing (using a pitot static tube) I can't be 100% sure.

So far I am reasonably happy with it, I packed the chits about 1/2 way through and thought its going onto my dented sierra I can't be bothered lining it up 100%, making it look smicko etc.

The reducer was fabbed out of offcuts of pvc I had laying around, I will make a few different reducers and see which gives the best performance. Until then, no pics of the mounts because the reducer looks terrible.

Top work I like how you followed the line of the guard & bonnet join, very similar to shep's set up...

What would set if off is another slight bend where the snorkel head is to make that sit square?

There is a slight bend there already, but i actually need to cut it on an angle again, align and reweld.

It doesn't line up spot on, its out about 10 mm from the line of the body, and 10mm from the line of the windscreen. had to make a comprimise between cutting the crap out of the bonnet, and sheer lazyness leaving it slightly out.

Which is where i chucked the chits and left it. Give it two months and itll be dented and scratched anyway.

Well the pressure and slight movement was causing the reducer and elbow to the air box to pop off.

Had to put in some more metal pipe with rubber joiners (it really hurt the budget that crap is expensive).
The pulse coming from the snorkel head under hard accel is very cool, makes the car sound like a turbo rotary (pulses caused by the rapid changes in flowrate etc due to valves opening closing etc).

However the pressure at the air box is better, did a few tests yesterday after fixing the piping, approx 0.1 PSI boost... WEWT

It has worked out to be 2/3 the cost of buying a premade unit, however the performance gained has delighted me.

Will get photos of combined efforts on snorkel upgrade on a friends zook. (replacing crappy rubber boot turns, and internal piping with PVC and lots of bog to hide the pvc). Stainless pipe exterior with pvc for smooth joins and neat piping etc under the hood, joining with one rubber boot onto airbox). Currently looks like stainless pipe shoved into very large mass of bog.

i have one quiet similar, exept mine has been press bent so it doesnt look anywere near as good as this one.

when i do mine im looking at running the pipe up the inside of the guard for and cut out just before the battery then run uop the window and angle the head across the window

So you are wanting to pipe it similar to factory setup with the outer part exiting near the indicator and going up the windscreen.

I considered this, however having replaced the crappy snorkel on my friends zook prior to doing mine, i decided to bypass the annoying bends as much as possible.

Plus all the bends reduce the small gains available.

Hi All,

I went to Bunnings and accidentally noticed they had some flexible/bendable aluminum ducting, ranging in sizes from 75mm to 300mm, used on ovens and exhaust fans...

But i am thinking it would be perfect to redirect the air intake, to get cooler air into the engine... i shall be looking into this a bit more, as i want to get better and cooler air flow into my carby.....

yer i might just do it similar fashion to urs and take alot of the hassels out of it
