i got an auto 2.5l V6 02 GV about a month ago and on the first tank of fuel it used like 11l/100km's that included beach work, since then it's averaged about 17l/100km's with no beach or 4x4 action, does anyone have any ides why the high fuel usage, i've done about 50/50 highway and city driving with air con on permantly.

I thought it might be because the front diff was locked but i jacked the front of the car up and the front "hubs"(inside the diff) lock and unlock in 4wd and 2wd respectivley.

what i did notice was in 4wd mode the front drive shaft engages in the transfer case and the front wheels lock together. but i can still turn the front wheels as in the front diff isn't engaging the front drive shaft. is this normal of the front diff. the GV went great on the beach so i suspect the front diff is fine.

thanks for any help.

what size tyres you running?......what weight are you carrying?......and factory consumption figures are based on the air con not being used.

17l per 100 does seem a little high. As joeblow says, are you carrying extra weight, aftermarket tyres etc?

How many Klms on the car? Ha it been serviced recently?

I had a drama a couple of years back with my 99 2.5l spiking in fuel usage. Problem was twofold, a couple of really buggered spark plugs and a badly clogged fuel filter. I had unknowingly picked up a bad batch of fuel at a wollworths service station.

& in a lab or wind tunnel, I would be looking at the air filter..

Due to the gay air pump arrangement, the 4WD engagement in the front diff will only stay engaged when the ignition is on. The T-case end is mechanical and will stay engaged regardless.

11L is pretty good, 17 is about the worst I can do if I hold it wide open in soft sand all day long. Something is not right there.

Clogged cat converter maybe? Looks like Steknig has had his cat converted lately, ask him.....

it's all standard, incl. tyres. it's done 160k's it's a bit high but still looks all good and shiny. at the moment it's used 3/4 of a tank, done 310km's (100 town/210 highway) so seems pretty crap.

as for the front diff, i had the car running when i checked it, maybe just not in the right conditions as the car wasn't moving.

could be, the O2 sensor only read's above the cat, so ecu dosen't know if it's blocked or not.
Still look at the air filter....
How many km's on this thing??

try pulling the error code from the ecu, it might tell you something.

Mmmmm...........V6, Auto, 02 GV,.....I would say its terminal, best cut your losses and sell it to me for $1000, then buy a new one. 8)

Also make sure your overdrive button is in, I know this sounds dumb but when my sister picked up hers she was really impressed with its power but it used 1/2 a tank of fuel to get from North Sydney to Pheasants Nest servo and when she called me to see if this was right she also asked me if it should be doing about 4500rpm at 100kph 8O
