umm well i have a fat positive wire going to the starter motor from the battery. on the coil i have the negative going to the dizzy and i tried having another wire from the negative on the coil go to the some thing metal on the motor or ive tried puting it on the negative on the battery, then i use a fat negative wire from the battery to crank it over, were did i go wrong?

when it starts i tried to take the fat wire of so it stops the starter motor once the motor is started but the motor dies because the coil doesnt keep sparking

cheers Aaron

Coil get's switched earth from the dizzy, so no need to earth that, the switched earth is what fire's the coil..
ciol will need a pos V to the pos side & eng block should have - battery conected to it..

Should go, providing carb has petrol.. :P

the pos on the coil should have the igintion wire going to it so just run a wire from the pos battery to the pos coil, then the big neg wire to the engine block and then earth on coil to either earth battery or block i belive

There are 3 pole to a starter
1 is the main power to solenoid
2 is power from solenoid to motor winding's(this one should already have a wire & nut on it & be closest to body of starter)
3 activator wire, this will be a blade terminal, just a lil bugger

pos battery to no1, then bridge no1 to no3 to engage the starter, unbridged to stop starter.
you can use a lil bit of wire or my favorite, a screw driver :P

ok whatever you do dont listen to any of these guys ...

firstly the coil needs positive power supply via an ignition switch , or you can (as you do when you hotwire an older car) give the coil its 12v supply direct from the battery

the negative goes straight to the spade terminal on the dizzy , DO NOT EARTH THE NEGATIVE WIRE , the spade terminal goes to the points in the dizzy , the dizzy is your earth , when the points are closed energy is stored in the coil , when the points open , the energy is discharged.

for a simple diagram google points dizzy wiring diagram

the starter motor needs a constant -ve and a constant +ve conected to the terminal with the 12mm nut (not the one that has the earth to the core)
the spade terminal just needs 12v to crank the starter which is then removed once the car starts
