Hi Guys,
I'm currently in the middle of a conversion for my SJ80. I have swapped out the G13BA for a G16B. The new engine I have thrown in was supposedly from a baleno, and once had a distributor. The thing that is giving me grief is the distributor set-up. I'm wondering if there is any way to do away with the distributor and use only a coil pack set-up. The ECU originally was from what seemed to also be a distributor type G16B, given the lack of coil pack plugs. I have already purchased the SY416 coil pack kit, and I'm using an SY416 loom. But there are no plugs on the loom that fit the coil packs. Do I have to use a distributor, or is there a way around this that someone is aware of?
I'm confused, because in my head, it doesnt make sense for the engine to require a distributor, if the engine is managed by an ecu.
If I do have to use a distributor, I have heard that I need to use a Vitara angled distributor with some modifications. First, is this the case? And second, if it is what modifications would I need to make to get the distributor to work?
Thanks in advance for any help, efi is a whole different ball game for me.

If it originally had a distributor and came from a baleno then you will need to use a vitara camshaft and distributor to make it work. The baleno distributor hits the firewall

Plenty of EFI cars have distributors. Mr Rocky is on the money. It’s a messy way of doing a G16 conversion though, a coil pack engine/loom/ecu would have been a much simpler job.

So let me just clarify a few things. Is it not possible to convert to coil pack from this point? I have an SY416 loom that was pulled from a coil pack motor.
Also the distributor is a bit odd, as it does not have a conventional drive gear sticking out the rear. Rather where the cam is normally, it recedes into the head where there is a key-way of sorts?
Am I wrong assuming that I can convert to a coil pack setup from here? If so whats involved? The way its working in my head is that If I have the loom and ecu from the coil pack engine, could I not just throw a plate cover over the hole for the distributor and just install the coil packs and away we go?
Thanks again for the help guys, and I appreciate the patience haha.

That is perfectly normal - the distributor needs to be driven by the cam, gears are only required when the distributor cannot be in line with the cam. Quote: could I not just throw a plate cover over the hole for the distributor and just install the coil packs and away we go? You'll need some sort of crank/cam angle sensor to tell the ECU when to fire the plugs - in this case it's inside the distributor - so if you can figure out how to remount it somewhere else, then yes, you can do it that way - there's also nothing stopping you from installing an aftermarket injection system and mounting a 60 tooth wheel on the crankshaft - other than the cost and complexity.

Could you not just run the baleno crank gear? It has the trigger wheel attached.

Well I thought I could run the timing for the ignition of the crank trigger wheel. I think that is what Fatzook is getting at. Which is king of what I was thinking as well. I was lead to believe that the crank angle sensor would be enough to run the timing. I think that is actually a better way of asking the question, would that work?
Cheers again guys.

It's going to need more than just the crank gear - looking at the parts manuals, the coil pack Baleno has two sensors, the crank sensor on the oil pump crank and the cam sensor on the back of the head where the distributor would normally sit.
What you would be doing is essentially converting a distributor style Baleno G16b to coil pack, in addition to the loom & ECU, at the very least you'll need to swap the cam and the other bits at the end of the head - the head part number doesn't change, so I guess the conversion might be feasible.

So sorry for the long time away, does anyone know where I can source the cam for the coild pack motor? Or can anyone help source a part number?

Mate that would honestly be great. More than happy to pay the postage, just at such a loss for trying to track one down.
