Hi all, my first enquiry since 2015 haha!!

Ive just bought a Sierra with 4.16 Transfer case gears.
The transfer case has standard arms and no ring..

What are your experiences?? what's the preferred method to strengthen the arms or buy the ring?

I prefer strengthen arms to the rockring
Ive seen cases break with both configurations.
Strengthened arms with upgraded transfer mounts is my prefered. If you use the ring be sure to square it up to the holes and clearance the holes to make it fit rather than force the bolts

Thanks Rocky, I had a calmini cradle on my last car that worked well.

As suggested, i might just strengthen the arms that are on there.

Also, invest in some Coliso transfercase mounts. Install them once, then walk away and never worry about them ever again

I do not recommend “upgrading” the rubber mounts. Upgrade the arms as much as you like, that makes sense (I dislike rings, but there’s a number of ways of preventing arms bending) but the transfer needs to float to take torque spikes off the gears. Mounting the case more firmly with harder mounts or through bolted mounts transfers stress into the gears.

If you’re breaking stock rubber mounts replace them with factory genuine mounts (these have a Bridgestone logo on them) they’re flexible enough the transfer will hit the floor without the mounts breaking. These are old cars now and the rubber has typically dried out and perished. Generic aftermarket replacements are not strong enough for even a standard car and fail readily.

Whilst it’s true 1.0litre Sierras use through bolted mounts (and 4 not 3 like a 1.3) the rubber is very soft and the way the mounts work there’s lots on movement in them.
