Hi Guys,

So have pulled out the 1985 tape deck that was rusted into a nearly solid lump from the 85 Drover gun buggy. I have a spare new Sony CD head-unit that I want to install in its spot. I will completely replace the wiring harness as part of the overall project and speakers will be two projector horns mounted on the roll bar (remember this is for broadcasting squeaks and squeals to attract foxes, not for playing Metallica!).

So my question is this - anyone got a great idea of how to DIY a water resistant mounting for the stereo into this space? I don't want to purchase an expensive marine stereo or even one of the marine stereo DIN pockets with lids, I want to bodgy the hell out of this with homemade bits

I was thinking maybe make something out of some of the Wife's Tupperware? Mounting points on the existing stereo housing are a bit crappy as it was only designed for the old style tape decks and not a modern DIN unit. I can fabricate all sorts of bits and pieces and it doesn't have to look nice, just needs to be secure and relative proof against rain since there is no top on the buggy.

Marine stereos aren't that expensive. But a normal stereo should survive there fine without waterproofing I reckon. Just buy a new one every 10 years and you'll be fine.

Yeah i have a Sony deck in mine with USB input and it's been hit with the hose, rained on and all sorts and is still kicking... it was only $99 at JB HiFi... 55w x4 channels makes it one of the more powerful decks available as well.

The one thing i'd suggest though is with your speakers get ally cones rather than paper. My previous speakers were paper and rotted out after about 3 years. Current speakers are all ally cones and are over 10 years old now still sounding great.

Look for a marine unit the are fairly robust and moisture proof, other than that a plastic container from a supermarket, many have side clips and an O ring in the lid, easy to run wires through and seal with silicon. Many sizes to choose from.
