I bought a set of extractors and fitted them over the weekend and not happy with how the extractors fit.

The extractors are hard against the clutch operating cylinder (slave cylinder) and also when together with the rest of the exhaust, the cat is hard against the chasis rails (I can't get rubber mounts on 'cos their is no clerance) and I also can't get the next mount on either 'cos the exhaust system itself is too far over. So I thought I would take the car to an exhaust place and see if they could do anything about it.

The answer I got from the exhaust palce was they could heat up the extractors and hit it to put a dent in the pipe to give me some clearance which obviously isn't they way I want to go (what is the point of the extractors then) and I think the dent would have to be huge. The suggestion I got was to contact the place from where I got them from and get a refund. What made matters worse is when I went to drive away, my clutch pedal went to the floor with a pool of clutch fluid on the ground ... this is the time that one wishes he never started this.

So I drove my car (had to put it in gear and start with only first available and stopping means to stall the car) around the corner to a mate who has a shop in the industrial area and latter tonight when traffic is low I will try and crawl her home, poor thing.

So I rang the shop I bought the exhaust from and they said take it to another exhaust shop, the shop said it was a fairly simple job to heat up the pipes and bend them to suit and that the exhaust place I have been to is on drugs (or something like that) so go to another shop. This is my main question, can extractors be bent to suit better in my car? Does this sound right that they can be heated up and bent? Refund is not an option because I ran the car with the exhaust on and the fact that I ran the car with the ehaust resting on the slave cyclinder is my fault - which is granted. It was for only a couple of kms down the street but granted.

BTW I hae a 2.0L suzuki (same as Stuey and Atari) and the extractors I purchased are for my model car - so I am not trying to do the impossible.

I had a lok through the workshop manual and I hoping it is just the hose between the slave cyclinder and the line that has melted and nothing more major.

A decent shop shouldn't have any dramas bending the extractors a bit but don't expect miracles... 20 degree bend is about the max you'll get.
Clutch is an easy fix, probably the hose or the piston cups melted.

To fix the extractors I recond the secondaries need to come out from the engine by about an 1 inch and then when the extractors meet the exhaust it will need to come in an additional inch from where it currently is.

who cares how easy it is to bend the pipes (which will kink doing it by heating) you paid money for ones to fit that engine in that car ( I am assuming) and they dont fit you you are entitled to a refund

they make pretty big claims on the site, hit them in the head with them and say, these are obviously not the best for this model

this was for a 2L GV and not i 2L Vitara - still needed work though

I have heavily modified my extractors to fit the vit engine in the sierra engine bay.

It was not much fun.

Here are some pics of the extractors compared with the stock, see the differences in the flanges and how I had to cut a piece out to fit. On the bottom of the stock manifold there is a cup like fitting (not sure the proper name) that is suppose to be taken off and put onto extractors. You can also see how hard they are against the slave cylinder and also how the cat is hard against the chassis and no chance of getting the rubber on.

So I was able to her home last night with the traffic low, crawling in first gear. Usually I can get a :)~ in on the way home from near work but I reckon I could of smoked a half a dozen durries on this trip. I took the exhaust off (getting good a this now took me hours to get the stock off but now everything is loose I can wip the exhaust off in 30 minutes) and it looked to me that only a loose bolt was the cause of the leak. Kinda look like it had been leaking for a while with the muck all over the engine and tranmission. The clutch fluid itslef is pretty ordinary, looks like metal in it so current plan is to get some clutch fulid today and put her back together. Fingers crossed :D

There's a dude on Outers who bought the same extractors from the same store for his J20A GV. He had problems with the fit as well. I think the bolt holes wouldn't line up.

Pretty shonky I reckon and that's even on a standard car.

i've been looking at extractors for my vitara & i know now what not to get.

are there any other options for the SV420 vitara's?

The flanges are way differant. No way they are the right extractors for your car

Not only are the flanges different but the originals ones have like a cup to allow extra movement between the two joins, hence the springs (kinda like a knee joint rather then a butting up hard). Apparently you need to take the cup off the original manifold and put them onto extractors. This was another reason why I took them to a shop 'cos the leak was pretty bad.

Also atari if you look at the original manifold there is another join between the top half and the bottom half to give a little bit more extra movement / flex which would suit the sort of off roading we all love to do incase the exhaust is bottomed out, something else to think about before going down this route.

I have been in contact with the shop who have been in contact with the supplier and "apparently" the supplier is going to let me know of an exhaust shop in town that can do the sort of "simple" bending that is required.

I just grabbedf some clutch fluid and a one man brake bleeding kit so tonight I will be able to tell if it was just a loose bolt that caused the clutch fluid to drop its guts.

As I see it, Part supplied was incorrect, so, this is the avenue needed to be followed.

If you bend it, then soon after it cracks, then the shop will say, sorry, you have modified the product, and so we are not at fault and no warranty is available.

They supplied the wrong part, they need to remedy this.

A couple of updates.

The leak at the slave cylinder was due to two aluminum washers had what looked like repeated attempts to tighten the bolt between the clutch line and the slave cylinder itself to stop previous leaks (check out the muck all over the box and sump and how clean the "new" leaking spot is .... signs someone else has been playing here .... second hand cars lol). Look like the pressure of the extractors on this bolt caused it to finally let the leak become really bad. Went down to a east land bearings and bought two copper washers for $1.40 and problem fixed properly.

On Friday I got a call from Suzi sport with a happy result. I have three options:
1. Return the extractors to them for a full refund.
2. Take the extractors to a exhaust shop, any exhaust shop and get them to modify the pipes to fit and they will pay for work. The manufacturer recommended the secondaries be chopped off and new ones fabricated.
3. If I take my car to the manufacturer/supplier in Sydney they will make a custom set to suit and as well fit a high flow cat for no extra cost.

I originally said I would go for option 1 but I am now thinking of going for a road trip to Sydney (it is about 4 1/2 hours away and combine it with a visit to my younger bro). Also this way we should then have a manufacturer in Australia that makes a proper set of extractors for the 2.0L Suzuki.

I don't think I could expect a better result really. It just goes to show it pays to be polite with a dispute like this, follow up with regular phone calls so they know you are not going to give up on the matter, finally don't go off all half cocked and sh!t as you just look stupid. I was originally reserved to use the Suzi sport name in a public forum like this but with a response such as this and an example of top customer service, I will recommend Suzi sport to others.

That is a good result, and good on them for coming to the party. I agree you don't go off half cocked when you are disputing a service supplied to you, but there are some business owners out there that will mistake polite with gullable and try and give you the bum steer. That's when you go off half cocked, but again, make sure you know what you are talking about otherwise you're the one that'll look like the idiot.
