Mate it is usually the brushes that wear in them. They can get sole kid problems that also cause the same problem that you are having.. They aren't expensive new... I can get them for 150 if the car is a 1.3
they really aren't hard to get out I reckon it is getting them back in that's the hard part

hey mate, did this a few days ago pulled the starter motor out and greases and cleaned it up. starts like new now. 3 bolts if i remember rightly and just drop it down in front of the diff. straightforward to pull apart aswell. just remember to disconnect your battery.

$150 would be for a whole starter motor

haha sorry... I fixed it without taking it out, i pulled my lwb one apart (because it was out) and figured out that there is a push rod that make the actual motor engage so it figured that it must sit still for the time that im driving and only turn when asked. So when it started I held the key on so that the starter motor would do an extra couple of revolutions and now for some reason it starts first go. I can only guess there was muck on the contacts and the extra couple of revolutions may have cleared it...
If this is a bad idea then please tell me...
I was impressed anyway never been able to fix the motor from the drivers seat...lol

Mate hook up a relay and run direct battery current to your postive terminal on the starter motor. Zook standard wiring sucks and as the cars get older so does the wiring. The standard wiring runs thorugh the loom so lots of voltage drop so if you hook up a wire straight off the battery to the starter, controlled with a relay it should give it more guts to kick it over.
I even found a wiring diagram for you:

too easy!
