Without detracting from the focus of this thread, thats an interesting statement - why?

Successful Grimbo was successful:

In the old days winches were expensive so you built a car and bought a winch afterwards.

The long and skinny of it.

another thing that's making me scratch my head, pantera's gu patrol weights over 3.2 tons & he has a 9,000lb winch. it's pulled him & everyone else out of anything & does it extremely easily. if his car weights 2 or 3 times that of my jimny, shouldn't he require a winch that's 2-3 times as powerful, meaning i could use a winch between 3-4000lbs & get similar results on my vehicle ?

9k is a bit light for a 3.2 tonne car. It's not terrible, but it is a bit light. Same as a 4.5k winch on a 1600kg car, which is what I'd work off for a jimny.

That's like saying cheep mudders or ebay or suzukis in general are ruining 4wding.
Just as a point my winches are no slower than any general 9000lb low mount. My runnva is a bit faster than the eBay unit.

The point still stands that yes there cheep. Yes they work. You just need to keep that in mind when using it.

Not at all Phil. Cheap mud tyres make your car more capable. Suzukis are already capable. Dragging a patrol wth open diffs and road tyres up a challenging track in winter to say you "drove it" because you have a $400 winch isn't 4wding.
