Hi everyone

My name is Sarah and I have a 1998 Jimny.
After me and my husband fitted 235/75/15 tyres and 2" body lift we realised how bad the stock Jimny low range gears are so we bought

6.5-1 reduction gears
Rear spartan auto locker
WT sierra transfer
32" BFG KM2 muddies

We really want to get everything fitted up but we want to start by fitting the gears cause thats a must have for the 32s as it already struggles on the 235s so if anyone could help we need to find out exactly what is needed to get the transfer fitted up to the Jimny but we cant find any diy write ups on how people have done it before.

thanks :)

I've just replied to your pm but some of my questions have been answered here.

Running 32s will require axle and cv upgrades but the gear set will probably be quite suitable. 32 is a big step up from 235s, what are your reasons for choosing such a large tyre?

Put gears in as soon as you can, particularly if you plan to run stupidly big rubber.

That said, your biggest headache is going to be fitting 32's.... and then trying your best not to break the glass driveline.

Why not just stick with the 235's, at least for now? What added capability will the 32's be providing you for the terrain you drive?

EDIT: Beaten to the punch while pouring a fresh

We just want to build a little monster. I thought if we are moding it we should do it right from the start plus my husband has a 4.2 turbo gu with 4" lift and 35s and I would like to out drive him :)

the main reason I want to fit the 32s is for the diff clearance in big mud holes there is so many people running massive tyres where our local tracks are and the jimny diffs out everywhere

Well that won't be hard. I doubt you'd need anything near a 32 to do that.

remember pootrols and jimnys have a big difference in size on diffs, so u dot really need massive tyres to get same clearance. plus by you being way smaller than him you have the chance to take different lines and crawl around him  .

32's are way too big and too much drama as others says.

now for gearing there is a whole tread around here about it with graphs

for I could remember of my own calculations (and someone correct me if Im wrong) is that for early jimnys, with a 235 tyre, you only need the WT transfer. That would take you almost stock, a bit under power (close to be driving on 215s). Other option is to get the highest gear (4.16 or 4.9 dot remember) and with fitting 30's you will be almost spot on, a bit overpower but with a massive loooooooooooowwwww.

any other gears would be way too low for the jimmy (sierras and jimnys with the transfer swap work different)

my advice. search for more info around here. Sell the 6.5 gears, get 4,16 and some 30" tyres

I appreciate your input but I am defiantly going to be running 32s I'm not worried about driveline as we will build it stronger when things break if I could run 35s or 37s I would but I don't think the jimny guards will handle it. We will probably end ep trail wring thie jimny to comps but at the moment it will just be a weekend warrior not to phased of dents and scratches our last weekend warrior and my daily driver didn't get pulled off the road till after it's 4th rollover and we have similar plans for the jimny :)

oh well awesome then

just be sure to make a build tread and post lots of photos (we love those)

not many jimnys get this kind of set-up. so always cool to see someone taking up the challenge ;)

i have an 8" lift and 32" brand new" bfg muddies you'll neeed much more then a 2"body lift and cut guards to run 32" i have no scrub. also i am running sierra W/T Tcase with 4.9 gearing in it great low range high range is a bit iffy snapping second but 6.5 will be way to reduced for a jimny.i can send you some pics of what i had to do to get no scrub on 32"s

You can quite easily get 32s under a jimny with 2" body lift, cut guards and bump stop spacing

to get no scrub thats how much lift you'll need without losing all of your wheel arches.

No it wouldn't. The more spring lift a car runs, the less droop it has and the harder it is to compress, so cars with higher spring lifts generally have less wheel travel than lower cars that can run softer spring rates.

This is true whenever you are trying to run tall lifts with standard spring and shock locations.

Jimnys with 2" lift springs already struggle to reach the bumpstop in the front when flexed, so the 2" lift is potentially reducing flex from stock.

ohh i get what you mean, if the bump stop is not reached do you know what is stopping it from flexing?? Radius arms or control arms??what ever its called?? what restricts that little bit of extra flex?

Just the high spring rate required to hold the car at the lift height. Alternatively, it could be spring bind caused by the number of turns required to get the height.

The additional problem is that if a shock is sized so it doesn't limit droop too much at the new height, it will prevent the axle ever reaching the bumpstop, regardless of the spring design. This is also bad news.

High spring lifts are minefield of compromises. That's why cutting guards and a lower car results in a better outcome.

I know. Apparently suspension is the harder to understand than quantum physics.

I like body lifts.

They are good for those of us without mad skillz.
